The death clock is slow ticking down, and so before it reaches it's end, time for the start of a retrospective series, as we look back at the best stories from each year we've been publishing.
Hindsight is a wonderful thing, and it's always hard to know when you write a piece what will be a hit or a miss. But even from the very first months, we had a pretty good idea about the stories that would live on in Google and continue to bring people back.
The Year was 2005, blogs were thin on the ground, and YesButNoButYes pioneered two very particular types of post - Top Ten Lists, and Where Are They Nows. And readers rejoiced, so much so that EVERY ONE of our top posts from 2005 is one of those two categories. Amazing. Here then, are the ten most popular YBNBY stories from 2005.
I'm a Brit, so I didn't even know who Barker was. But somehow Jellio managed to tap into that retro-TV vein that propelled this story into our Top Ten.
Not only one of the top stories of 2005, but also one of the most commented on (and we'll be posting a list of our most commented stories later in this series). Everytime I hear the word "curbing" it makes me shudder.
Strippers Burlesque artists- a subject dear to our hearts. And this list ran down the GILF's of yesteryear. Some nice comments on this one.
This was five years ago, and a lot can change in that time. I believe Charlotte Church got married and had kids, and my wife told me only this morning that Steph Tanner has a crystal meth habit. So let's retitle this one "Where were they then, and were they hot at the time"
You might be groaning at some of these Top Ten lists, but this was before Cracked went and made this whole thing over-saturated. Sex and Hollywood, always a good combination.
As Kramer and Jerry once told told us, men's fascination with catfights always ultimately comes down to one thing - the remote chance that the girls might actually kiss. In 2005, we got straight to the kissing.
Probably one of my top five favorite YBNBY posts ever, because it led to my exclusive interview with Debbie herself.
Is anyone noticing a pattern in these stories? Well, don't blame us - all those top tens we wrote of beautiful poetry and our favorite classical concertos didn't make it on the pageviews. So you're stuck with the boobies.
Still one of our most popular posts of all time, this was kind of a tongue in cheek piece, but something tells me all that google traffic is sending us serious handheld porn aficionados. If only we were staying in business, we could do an iPad version.
I have no idea why this one took the top spot - it was an idea I had after watching a British TV show about streaking, and I remember it being very hard to even come up with ten. And posts that feature nudity are always hard to get traffic to, because they're NDFW and we get a lot of "bored at work" traffic. This was helped up a lot by being linked to from major newspaper websites in Scandinavia, Italy and Germany. It's also a VERY popular post in the middle east - read into that what you will. Naked women, I think you'll find, transcends language and culture.
And that's it for 2005. Come back on Wednesday for The Best of 2006.
