Bengals receiver Chad Johnson is a polarizing figure. Some love him. Some loathe him. Honestly, I think he's pretty funny. I just wish he'd catch a few more touchdowns.
#85's latest move is downright brilliant.
Since the No Fun League patrols uniforms like boot camp at Pendleton (that's a reference for my Dad) players must wear their legal surname on the back of their jersey. Chad wanted to wear his nickname "Ocho Cinco." Eighty-five. Many will remember the Velcro Incident of 2006. (Pictured above.)
Chad Johnson legally changed his name today so he can wear his nickname on his jersey. He is now legally Chad Javon Ocho Cinco. Have to doff my rumpled fedora to that move. Well played Ocho Cinco. Well played.
(Addendum: My little brother Teddy just made a strong point. What happens if Ocho Cinco is dealt to a team that already has a #85? "But it's my legal name dog! Check the certificate!" Could be trouble.)

I don't know if I'd use the words loath, but I certainly fall into the "dislike him" category.
He really showed them, didn't he? What a jackass.
This could get real interesting if more players participate. Could you imagine a player legally changing his name to 'Must Love Youmama' and then stand next to 'Greg Guffolk' or a player changing his name to 'Jim Jablome' and then stand next to 'Chris Heywood'.
Correctly, it's "ochenta y cinco".
How douchebag can a guy be? Idiot...
Barb - maybe he meant "eight - five" instead of eighty-five... or maybe he is a dumb ass and can't spell in Spanish.
Barbwire, bet he feels like a dumbass now.
If the team has a #85, that #85 will most likely "sell" his number to Ocho Cinco. Money actually does change hands, on the order of thousands, IIRC. Common happening when a "name" player comes to a team that already has a "non-name" player with the same number.
FYI...
doesn't he kinda look like wesley snipes from demolition man?
SP--from that angle, absolutely....
btw, did you ever figure out how the shell system worked in that movie?
As a true blue (okay, orange and black) Cinci fan, I have to like him, and yet hate him at the same time.
I think when he first did the prank, he didn't realize it was eight - five, and not eighty five, but by now he has to know, but he can't change it back.
The trade business would have made more sense had he actually done well last year. He's not going to get a better contract or a good trade after coming off his worst year.
Its like Corey Dillon.., you love him for what he can do.., you hate him because he wants to do it somewhere else where he can win, and yet, you understand the desire to win.
ESPN 8 - The OCHO.
Ah Corey Dillon. One of the higher character products from my beloved Washington Huskies.
(And briefly my high school.)
I sympathize kbk. Can't be easy to be a Bengals fan.
Easier than being a Lions fan.
Or a tigers fan for that matter. Being a Tiger fan this year is like winning a date with Scarlett Johannson, only to find out that "Scarlett Johannson" is slang for kick in the marbles.
Yeah, what happened to you guys Paul? Nearly everyone, including myself, had the Tigers challenging the Red Sox and the Angels for AL pennant.
Being a Mariners fan, I sympathize with the "good on paper, crap on the field" syndrome. We signed Richie Sexon and Adrian Beltre to huge deals. Wah ... wahhhh.
JW
Hell, I Live about an hour and a ahlf from detroit, and i can't bring myself to be a lions or tigers fan, i can't stand the disappointment. The Red Wings on the other hand, now there's a team to root for.
wah, wah, wah ... you're all making me feel so sorry for your misery. Try this on for size:
I grew up as a Cubs fan (still am) starting with the Ernie Banks era. Still, nothing. Then, I moved to Arizona to go to college and became a Cardinals fan (still am) when they moved there from St. Louis. Again, nothing.
Where I live now most people are Cincy fans. No thanks.
I got your misery right here ...
Damn Tim. That does blow. I'm dropping you a coupla Slim Jims in the mail. Hope it helps. Don't forget... WE LOVE YOU MAN!
Tim----could you become a Duke fan? They have a new football coach these days and a little bit of your brand of luck would make me a very, very happy girl.....
(I feel your pain....grew up as a Mets/Rangers fan during the Yankee/Islander dynasties....but it taught me how not to cave to peer pressure!)
And you can use your story in sports bars to pick up girls--we like those guys who are loyal no matter what happens--much better than a frontrunner ANY day!
S.O. - Sneaky. I like that. You've given me some ideas now.
Hey Tim - GO PISTONS AND CELTICS!!
CLC - What I left out is that I am a Suns fan. Given my luck, I know you like that ... but they've had more successes than my other teams. Kobe blows. (Sorry, I didn't mean to type that out loud!)
S.O. - Duke? Who do you follow that I would need to jinx Duke? Do I sense a Syracuse fan?
Since we're including college teams in the mix, shout out to my Alma Mater:
ASU!!!! Go Sun Devils. Gonna give USC a run for the title this year. Washington blows. (Sorry, JW, but you know it's true.)
and my adopted local team UK! Nothing better than Wildcat basketball at Rupp.
Tim - Kobe got blown. Get it right. And for the record, I'm a LAKERS fan, not a dick-rider. When he's gone, there will be other superstars.
...and of course, the Trojans rock. I think you're getting me worked up on purpose Tim.
Bills and Sabres fan here. Misery loves company, I guess...
CLC - I do like to get you worked up. We've discovered that one slight against the Lakers will get a rise. Now, USC as well. This football season should be fun ...
October 11.
Tim....hahaha....like I'm going to give you ammo. All I need to do is to get you thinking about Duke to get your magic touch to work....
and get it right...Palin blows.....
(everyone knows thanks to YBNBY that Palin girls are easy)(see the link to the tee shirts that was posted in the last few days)
S.O. - Sluts in the White House. This is something new?
For the Republicans, yes....the Dems had JFK and Clinton's harems---but who would ever fess up to being a Lincoln/.../Nixon/Bush (Sr or Jr) groupie?
Reagan maybe...he did keep candy on hand....
Tim - it's not so much one "slight" that will get me worked up. It's just when respect isn't properly given where it's due.
October 11th it is. And make sure you have this much base in your voice, when you're called upon to validate your statements. Don't worry. I'll be gentle.
Goshdarnitall.....now we need the movie announcing voice to talk about the CLC and Tim college football rivalry.....
"October 11th....the game of the century....who will win the showdown between the teams favored by YBNBY Loyal 77ers Tim and CLC?
The world will be changed forever...."
Is it 77ers? 77ians? Not sure...
S.O. - I was thinking more along the lines of the Bush daughters. I wanna believe ...
CLC - We'll see. Petie doesn't have Norm Chow around anymore. The mighty Trojans are vulnerable. The dynasty is crumbling ...
By the way, why are Trojans fans always waving 'we are number 2' whenever the Trojan fight song is played?
Ewww....you want to believe that they had somethin' going on with their dad?
(kidding)
Maybe a little something with the Secret Service....but I'm talking about Presidential action--and George's daughters didn't actually live under the WH roof---those were the college years...
I love the "I too am a loyal fan of bad sports teams" confessions. They make me feel better.
Though don't count my Seahawks out this year. If our running game pans out, we could challenge in the NFC. Then lose to the 16-0 Patriots in the Super Bowl. *sigh*
JW - C'mon, the Cardinals are up and coming. Your hawks aren't even gonna get out of the division.
I don't know Tim. Starting quarterback could be an issue for you guys.
Of course our running game is a total mystery at this point.
I think (okay hope against hope) that the patriots have a down year. I'm sick of them. I'll root for whatever underdog as a surrogate for my Bengals. But I don't think any other football team has had the down years of the 90s like the Bengals. Hell, its 2008, and we've had 1 winning season since the early 1990.
Okay.., Arizona Cardinals, I feel you. I'll give you that one. One winning season since 1985.
Johnny, sorry to say but your boys are going down this weekend. Nice QB, but who's catching the ball? ;-)
We are slight underdogs this weekend at Buffalo. Our receiver by committee gambit works to a degree. Branch, Engram and Burleson.
I'm so happy football is starting.
Howzabout them jets?...
But Burleson's the only one that's healthy (and could be the only one that plays). Matt's dinged too.
Just read that Peters is dragging tail back to Buffalo. He obviously won't be in the lineup Sunday though...
Good luck.
That's why Vegas has us as underdogs.
Thanks.
JW
Since college teams came up...allow me to share my Alma Mater, Western Michigan Univ...that's right, the MAC conference. Undying love with inevitable let down.
I respect that Paul.
I wrote a column about being a sports fan a while ago. I'm going to put it up later.
Looks like Chad may not be able to wear his new Jersey after all... unless he wants to shell out $4 million:
