The Doorman Cometh

Those of you outside the New York metropolitan area probably have no idea that our fair city is currently under the horrible and crippling threat of a doorman strike. While I'll admit doormen (and other building workers) provide a valuable job, the city is preparing for this strike like life as we know it will blink into the void.

The last time we faced this "threat" was 2005. Then, I was living (through a series of mishaps and lies) in an exclusive apartment building on Central Park West. When talk of that strike spread around the building, you'd have thought Primae Noctis was invoked. Because we had an elevator that had to be operated, I was asked to take a day off from work to shuttle little old ladies and their poodles up to the 12th floor. The strike was avoided by mere hours and the fragile old women were once again able to ride in the elevators with white-gloved men.

Luckily, a series of personal tragedies and losses forced me to move to a brownstone without a doorman or an elevator, so this strike will have no bearing on my life whatsoever. I'm all for doormen receiving better pay and benefits, but the city needs to stop acting like a giant volcano is about to spew black ash and destroy flight travel for an entire continent. Oh wait...

I'm from Chicago, and never lived anywhere need a place that needed a doorman, so I can't say I understand their plight.

What I can say is that union needs a much better chapter designation number.
