5 fees airlines are actually implementing

123smuchsed.jpg
By now most airlines are charging for checked baggage. The stuff stowed under the plane.

While it sucks, most people seem to have accepted it. And the airlines report that since they've started charging, bags are lighter and less luggage is getting lost.

So when you're making money on nickle and dimes, why stop? Here's 5 relatively new fees the airlines are trying out.

Want to fly?
There's a fee for that too.

1: Charging for bathrooms. Discount airline Ryanair plans to charge people to pee. $1.50 is the proposed charge for #1, #2 or changing your kids diaper.

So bring your quarters. Or depends. Or hold it.

2. Carry-on bag fee. Spirit airlines will attempt to charge "between $20 and $45 for anything a passenger places in an overhead bin." Might as well check that bag then.

3. Charging for drinks. Charging for food has had a price tag for years, but now it seems every beverage will cost you.

On US Air, it's $2 for soda's and nonalcoholic drinks on the beverage cart passing through the aisle.

4. Fee for frequent flyer mile travel. The flights with miles may be free but at least one airline, US Air, charges between $25 and $50 to book travel for frequent flyer trips. Lets call this the free flight fee.

5. Choice seat fee. Want to book the seat with a little extra leg room? Fly AirTran and it'll cost an extra $20 for a bulkhead seat. Spirit Air tacks on $15 for a window seat.

If one airline gets away with these extra charges, you can bet the others jump on board soon.

But here at yesbutnobutyes we know you have a choice of airlines. We thank you for picking to get screwed by whichever one you choose.

Yes we do get a choice. Thats why I choose southwest airlines where checking bags, carrying on bags, sodas, peeing, window seats, bulkheads and frequent flier flights are still free. Why would you fly with anyone else?

US Airways no longer charges for soda and water. They don't take cash for alcoholic beverage and food purchases though.

Southwest is pretty awesome for not charging for everything. I fly with a large duffel and a fully packed snowboard bag a couple of times a year and I pay nothing extra. I tend to get a lot of free drinks too. They do charge a $15 early check-in fee so you can get a shot at a better seat rather than trying to be at your computer 24hrs before departure. I am pretty sure that if you cancel a flight, there is no fee either if you keep the refund as a credit.

They could just hide all these fees in slightly higher ticket prices. People would pay a little extra for the ticket to fly the airline that didn't charge a bunch of extra fees. They'd feel like they were sticking it to the airlines that were still charging them...
