For 364 days a year, America avoids television commercials. Video herpes. Stay away from the those yuckies. Madison Avenue is not going to indoctrinate me
Then somehow the modern day Don Drapers got America to care about commercials one day a year. "Gotta see the Super Bowl Commercials. They might have horsies playing football or a monkey doing something awesome." One person watching was guitar's living blowtorch and renaissance man, Jack White III.
There was Jack is on his couch in Nashville, eating his legendary homemade 7 Layer Dip when an Air Force commercial came on. "Wait a tic, that's our freaking song." Yep, The Air Force used an unauthorized re-recording of "Fell In Love With a Girl" to show the Air Force look like an 80's beer commercial.
The commercial in question starts 7 seconds in:
The Stripes released a statement that reads:
I played the chords along with the commercial. They're the same. B, A, D, E. Some reports say the Air Force is already pulling the ad. Judge for yourself:

We believe our song was re-recorded and used without permission of the White Stripes, our publishers, label or management. The White Stripes take strong insult and objection to the Air Force Reserve presenting this advertisement with the implication that we licensed one of our songs to encourage recruitment during a war that we do not support. The White Stripes support this nation's military, at home and during times when our country needs and depends on them. We simply don't want to be a cog in the wheel of the current conflict, and hope for a safe and speedy return home for our troops. We have not licensed this song to the Air Force Reserve and plan to take strong action to stop the ad containing this music.

I thought it sounded like "Fell in Love with a Girl," but with enough difference that they'd get away with it. There was a Mitsubishi add years ago with a song that sounded like "LaGrange" by ZZTop, but it wasn't, so they could use it without paying for it. I'm certain there are other examples.
The ZZ Top case is one that has been brought up in the news stories. Good memory, pally

Let's not forget about the song "Ice, Ice Baby", Vanilla Ice (Robert Matthew Van Winkle) "borrowing heavily" from the Queen/David Bowie song "Under Pressure". Is sampling a song the same as ripping it off?
Yeah, Ice added one half-note, and it was an all new song.
Similar thing came up the other week when the Australian band 'Men at Work' had there hit 'Down Under' deemed a rip off of an old girl guide song 'Kookaburra sits in the Old Gum Tree'.
Read about it here if interested. http://tinyurl.com/yeva99v
I actually googled "Jack White's 7 layer dip"
There's no such thing. Damn you Johnny!
Still, I'll bet Jack White makes some mean ass dip.
My work here is done....
