If you live in DC and are a sports fan, you might want to pick up today's (Friday's) issue of the Washington Times, since it will be the last issue with a sports section. Forty percent of the newspaper's staff were laid off Wednesday, including the entire sports department. Those who did not get pink slips are rather nervous about their future as well. So many editors are gone that it is very possible no one still employed there actually read what was published today. Others have plenty to say about it.
When large layoffs occur, or even an individual firing, there are usually procedures companies will go through to protect themselves. The key codes are changed, severance pay is discussed, and sometimes there are escorts to watch an employee clear out his desk to make sure no company paper clips are taken. However, the Times overlooked one detail. They didn't change the password on the sports department's Twitter account.
TWTSports has been abuzz for the last two days as former sportswriters aired their grievances, drummed up support, and started their own blogs. Some have even found new positions. Pass the popcorn, this won't last forever. Best of luck to all those starting the new year looking for a livelihood.
