With 2015 fast approaching, it looks like we aren't going to get that Mr. Fusion we were hoping for. And with plutonium harder to come by than earplugs at a Rachel Ray taping, it appears my time machine may never work. The closest we'll get to traveling back in time, at least in Manhattan, is The Mannahatta Project. Using their superb Google Map overlay, you can see what Manhattan looked like in 1609. Further, the project will tell you what types of flora and fauna populated certain areas, and details on what the landscape looked like back then.
