3 Chords & the Truth #22: MailBag Part Deux

As the light fades in Thompkins Square Park, we continue the viewer mailbag (Part 1) from a place we thought had better lighting. Turns out there's just more rats.

Then we attempt to answer a question which has been discussed in YBNBY Forums for a while; douchebags and the origins of douchebaggery.

Plus, I admit to an embarrassing metrosexual transgression. And Johnny learns something new thing about Echowood.

This 3 Chords has a little something for everybody. Just press play.

Seems pretty one-sided on the douchebaggery being a learned behavior.. I gotta take nature over nurture. Actions and attitudes, in their most basic form, come down to neurons. Neurons are composed largely of proteins and fatty acids (which are made by other proteins) all of which are coded in our DNA. Short nucleotide polymorphisms can have an affect on protein structure and function. Ultimately, our protein and chemical composition is the basis of everything. This gets very complex very quick, and I don't want to waste your time with the nuances of human behavior as a function of protein mutation, nor am I qualified to explain it all. In a nut-shell, however, ones inability to respond to chemical stimuli can have a causal link to behavior.

For example, when we eat and become satiated a hormone (ghrelin) is released into our blood which signals to our brain that our appetite has been fulfilled thus suppressing the urge to eat. People who have a mutation in their DNA that disrupts the function of one of the many proteins involved in this process lack the feedback mechanism that tells them to stop eating. This trait is absolutely hereditary. The only difference between this example and douchebaggery is that nobody has yet to identify a similar feedback type loop for social behavior; most likely because double popping two pastel polo shirts from Abercrombie and Fitch has yet to hit the WHO list of important diseases (fuckin' bureaucrats).

Hereditary can explain the behavior of the slags on my super sweet 16 too. It is the same inability to know when enough is enough as the over-eater. Their bodies are either over-producing, under-producing, or producing faulty components of one or more neurological pathways that have psychological ramifications and are manifested as behavior. It's a fucking typo in their DNA, or maybe it's a typo in our DNA. Either way, some people over indulge, some under indulge, and some have found a balance. Apathy towards luxury, and satisfaction with being average just don't make for a good TV show. The worst part is that douchebags and scumbags have been around since the beginning of time, yet people keep fucking them.

Is Thompkins Square Park near to a dog pound?

said phatlard on September 30, 2009 7:41 PM.

I was thinking the same thing, Phat.

I was expecting a Hitchcock-esque twist any moment. Thousands of dogs swarming in and dropping some truth on Johnny's shoes.

Jimbo, that's wayyyyy too smart for me to understand. All I know is, it's annoying getting poked in the face by douchebag spiky hair and I'm glad there are no douchebags in the L77

Oddly enough, the Park is next to Arsenio Hall's former dog pound. They moved.

Sorry 'bout that Vicky.

I certainly didn't intend to put you off. I'm the type of person who thinks on the brutally sciencritical level (yes, I just made that word up). My long winded and jargon filled responses probably get ignored more than they get read, but just in case....

No no no, I aspire to be that smart. I think it's a good thing that you're sciencritical. Excellent word by the way!

I forgot, I am wearing that Triumph Motorcycles shirt to inspire as many as I can to go to the record shop and get this:

Yep, Dylan is wearing the same shirt on the cover of "Highway 61 Revisited." Go get the record. Preferably on vinyl.

Spin the black circle...
