The Death of Rolling Stone
I am sad to report that Rolling Stone magazine has officially died. The rag was 45-years-old.

As for me, it died a looooong time ago. And to think back in the day, it actually concentrated on rebellious, dirtied fun, fist pumping , rock and roll.

By this definition JW (Jones Bros on cover = death of magazine) RS was dead 10 years ago when Brittney, N*Sync, Backstreet Boys and all those other teeny boppers graced various covers.

Come to think of it, RS was dead in the 80s when Madonna and Michael Jackson were on the cover multiple times. Or in 70s when the BeeGees and Donna Summer were on the cover.

This magazine lost it's counter culture status decades ago. Along with its leadership role in music. Shit, the whole "Perception. Reality" print ad campaign in the 80s made it clear long ago that RS was just a place to pimp ads to throngs of thirsty kid/consumers.

Like much of print media it's just trying to stay a float now. It's a shell of it roots.

Yep, I stopped buying it years ago, only picking up an occasional issue. I just liked the joke. Freaking Jonas Brothers...

Like I need to see more JB pics in my house. Thanks Rolling Stone!!!!

Jerks.

said JediJeff on June 24, 2009 12:02 PM.

Wonder if the stylists for this shoot dressed Jonas like the 50s Marlon Brando on purpose?

said Baierman on June 24, 2009 12:07 PM.

So does it mean that RS is a zombie magazine eating brains since decades ago!?!?!

RUN TO THE HILLS!!!!!

Uh, well... whatever... one day or another the counter culture icons need to choose between bending over to the industry or dying...

The way I see it, Rolling Stone has been in a vegetative state for years, occasionally wiggling a finger giving hope that she was still alive. The Jonas Brothers on the cover is yanking the life support cord out of the socket. She sleeps with the fishes...

Note there's an article on the bailout - How Goldman Sachs Runs Washington. I bet it's a decently investigated, relevant, timely piece, written in a serious but unstuffy way so the kids can see what The Man is up to. And I bet if the writer of this piece asks you if you've read the article and you go - 'Is that the issue with the Jonas Brothers on it?' he throws up in his mouth a little.

at least it's not Hannah Montana.....

Sheriff,
The only difference I see is which side of their shirt the buttons are on.

said EffenIdontcare on June 24, 2009 8:38 PM.

Just to play the Devil's advocate here, Rolling Stone may just be accurately representing the current state of rock music. Too bad it sucks, I guess.

i'm glad you feel the same about RS as i do JW. i resorted to calling it "rolling shit" many years ago.

truth be told though, hasn't almost every small publication that earned it's following by being the voice of hard core fans and a "fuck the establishment" attitude eventually sold out?

i know that making money is high on the list for every business but RS seemed to some how keep it's edge for several years past their sell out point.

maxim and blender magazines caught my attention for the first year or so but then they went the way of the sell outs as well.

i can't say that i could stick to my guns if big money came my way.

said phatlard on June 24, 2009 9:48 PM.

Yeah, you're probably right Lard. Spin is barely readable as well. I was a subscriber to both for years. That was 10 years ago. The only music mag that is worth it's salt is the British publication Q.

Is Circus still around?

Now there's a magazine that excelled at puff pieces and helping sell shitty music.

said Baierman on June 24, 2009 10:32 PM.

I can't imagine PJ O'Rourke sharing same bylines as the Jonas Bros. What a shame. Pls say goodbye to beautifully written short stories, essays, reports, reviews etc by the likes of Tom Wolfe, Ben Fong-Torres, Cameron Crowe et al who lit up the great American literary scene.

I say amen Juls. Can I get an amen from the congregation?

said Johnny Wright on June 24, 2009 11:01 PM.

Amen, my good reverend.

said Leonardo Carvalho on June 24, 2009 11:05 PM.

I hear ya. That was a different time.

oh god, say it aint so!

said Evangeline on June 27, 2009 12:01 AM.

Now, I will not get my picture on the cover of the rolling stone...

said the flute keeper on June 27, 2009 3:37 AM.

Please. if you're all going to bleat and shriek and moan and cry like blubbery crybabies because Rolling Stone has O NOOOOEEEESSSSS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! put an act that's popular with teenyboppers, teenage girls on the cover, you're a little less then 40 years late to the party. Where the hell were all of you when David Cassidy, at the time famous for being the lead on The Partridge Family appeared naked on the cover?

Who do you expect to be on the cover, Jimi Hendrix? The Band? Jim Morrison? Rolling Stone covers or purports to cover "popular culture" and as mindsplinteringly awful as it may be to y'all, the Jonas Brothers are a big part of the current popular culture, ergo Rolling Stone will cover them and even put them on the cover.

You don't like it and whine and cry? Congratulations, you are no longer hip or cool. You have been permanently kicked off the hip and cool bus.

Deal.

said Misanthropic Contrarian on June 30, 2009 11:48 AM.

The truth is that Rolling Stone is just a business and has been for many years...they would be happy to put Hendrix on the cover...if it would sell.

They amount of integrity that they have left is the same as most of the kids who bought Rolling Stone in the sixties have left...little to none.
Rolling Stone didnt sell out...The Generation of the Sixties did.
"Deadhead sticker on a cadillac".

Dont worry though...soon all physical magazines will be extinct and Rolling Stone will be 'just another website'.
