Johnny Depp has based his characters on famous figures before. Keith Richards for the Pirates movies, Michael Jackson for Willy Wonka, etc.
Based on the first press release for the Alice in Wonderland movie, Depp seems to be drawing from a collection of people. I see Elijah Wood, Madonna and a bit of Carrot Top.

Visually all the pictures so far are incredible, just what you expect from Burton. But for e it's been a long time since he made a great film.
Ha, good call, Baierman -- when I first saw this pic I thought it really was Elijah Wood, too.
Hadn't made the Madonna/Carrot Top connection, though...so when I start having nightmares about the three of them getting it on, I'll be sending my therapist bills to you, thank you very much.
I cannot wait for this film.
