Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs was my favorite kids book growing up. I still have my copy of it somewhere.
If you haven't read it, you should. Especially if you have kids. They'll love it.
And how can they not. It's the story of a place where the weather is food. So the townspeople know what they'll be eating each day based on what falls from the sky. But then the weather goes nuts...
I always thought it was the perfect story for a movie. And it finally will be on September 19th.
Problem is, it seems the only thing the movie really has in common with the book is the title. Based on this animated trailer, they've decided the weather needed a back story and a cooky main character/inventor who creates the machine that causes food to fall from the sky.
Hilarity will ensure I'm sure. Especially now that they've added "Steve" the wacky pet monkey/friend who'll join the high-jinks and help save the day.
Yawn. Boo. Hiss.
"Inspired by the famous children's book.," says the official movie site. They should add "Very loosely" I think.
Of course Andy Sandberg and Bruce Campbell are lending their voices, so I'm sure it'll be up for an academy award.
I know, I know, I need to adjust my expectations. I'm sure it will be fine, funny and cute for today's youth animated gene pool.
At least they kept the bit with the pancake falling on the school. Here's the trailer.

This was also one of my favorite books as a child and while it seems exciting they're making it into a movie, it's very disappointing that they had to put in a back story as to Why the weather was food. That was one of the most fun parts of the whole book. It was just their regular daily life that they took for granted. I'm sure it will be fun and cute, as you said, but it seems like the movie has definitely lost the spirit of the book itself. Bummer!
Every time I see something like this , I always repeat the same mantra in my head: "Its only a kid's movie". The little tykes will eat this up like Daniel Day-Lewis will drink your milkshake. This film wasn't made for adults. Sure, it'll be entertaining to say the least, but its A KID'S MOVIE.
I'm getting a little tired of people complaining about how things like this "raped their childhood". Realistically, haven't other things ruined your childhood? Like when you found out Santa wasn't real, or the first time someone fingered your butt?
At least Michael Bay has it right by softening the blow with Megan "I'm fucking with the minds of every straight man and bisexual woman" Fox in the Transformers.
Really, though, this movie isn't the worst culprit. Still, I can't WAIT to see Dakota Fanning singing "Cherry Bomb" in the upcoming Runaways movie!
I felt the same way about James And The Giant Peach, but I enjoyed the movie once I finally saw it. I'm gonna give this one a chance, methinks.
And YMNB, great way of looking at it.
As I said, I'm sure it'll be fine and cute.
I'm just not sure why they didn't play off the original concept which is charming - grandpa tells a story...
