From The Sports Desk...An unauthorized biography is on the shelves of your local bookshop today called "American Icon: The Fall of Roger Clemens and the Rise of Steroids in America's Pastime." Did you know that? Of course you didn't. Hardly anyone did. Barnes & Noble managers were surprised to see the title when it arrived.
The novelty of books trashing baseball stars and exposing steroid use is old hat. We all know that the Steroids Era happened and was shameful. We've been angry and disgusted. Then moved on. When the Big Papi revelations surface that he was juiced (it's gonna happen, kids) most will shrug and say sarcastically "shocker." Nobody cares about a book that details The Rocket taking shots of testosterone in the rear end and cheating on his missus with teenage country singers.
What does Clemens do? Go on television to "defend himself." What is he actually doing? Giving free publicity to a book that nobody cared about and assured that it will move thousands more units. He makes sure the book's name is on the front page of every sports website and blog. He is inadvertently promoting the book that kills him for 464 pages. One of the dumber things we've seen in a while.
Good move Rog!
Freaking dope...
