9 vs. Nine

9Nine.pngAre you looking forward to seeing 9? Or would you rather see NIne? The names are similar and the posters are similar. But this is not a case of "Haven't we seen that movie before?" like Armageddon and Deep Impact. The two are very different. Both will be in theaters later this year, and from what I've seen, anyone who gets them confused is liable to be severely disappointed when the theater lights go down. Continue reading for a guide to both, and some other numerical films.

The movie 9 is a post-apocalyptic animation by Tim Burton. 9 is the name of the main character, as far as I can tell. It has a star-studded voice cast that includes Elijah Wood, Jennifer Connelly, Crispin Glover, and John C. Reilly. It will be released September 9th (get it? 9-9-09).

Nine, on the other hand, is a musical starring Daniel Day-Lewis as a womanizing film director. The women include Judi Dench, Nicole Kidman, Penelope Cruz, Kate Hudson, and Sophia Loren. According to IMDb, it will be released November 25th.

To keep this straight, the number sign 9 is the animation. The spelled-out Nine is the musical. I can't see from here whether the numbers have any significance to either plot line. Maybe they just took a number. It's been done before.

The James Cagney film One Two Three from 1961 has several numbers covered.

In 2005, the movie Three was released, then in 2006 there was Thr3e.

I found a Christian movie named Six, and there's Se7en, from 1995 starring Brad Pitt and Morgan Freeman. There's also a Bollywood film named EIGHT.

Of course you remember 10 from 1979 starring Dudley Moore and Bo Derek.

The rest of the film is available on YouTube in ten-minute segments.

There' a short film named Eleven, and a feature called Twelve which hasn't yet been filmed, but is scheduled for a 2010 release. But we have the 2007 Russian movie 12 and the 2003 movie 12 which took 12 years to finish production (Thanks, Leonardo Carvalho). The 2003 movie Thirteen saw Holly Hunter nominated for a best supporting actress Oscar. The movie was every parent's nightmare.

Oh yeah, there's also a movie named 11:14. And 15. I think we'll stop there, since no one can name a movie "16" without tagging on "sweet" or "candles". Four and Five are available, as well as 4 and 5, in case you need a title for your next movie.

(Thanks, Brother Bill!)

There are two movies named "12": http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0488478/ and http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0192947/ and a movie named "12:01" http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0106188/

I've watched this 12:01, kind like The Ground Hog Day, watchable, but not half funny as the Bill Murray's one.

It's called "Nine" because it's based on Fellini's "8 1/2":

"Fellini had entitled his film 8½ in recognition of his prior body of work, which included six full-length films, two short films, and one film that he co-directed. Yeston's title for the musical adaptation adds another half-credit to Fellini's output and refers to Guido's age in his primal hallucination. Yeston called the musical Nine, explaining that if you add music to 8½, "it's like half a number more."- (quote is from a book on Maury Yeston)

Tim Burton is just plain nuts. Why would you name someone '9', when you can name them '7'?

'7' is a fine name.
