It's been one week since I joined Twitter. (Scary, that works really well as the opening line to a Barenaked Ladies' song) This week-long sociological experiment has lead to some interesting findings.
- I find myself reading the YesButNoButYes Twitter feed even though I'm on the site constantly. Similarly, I'm an incredible narcissist.
- No matter how much you beg, people won't fall over themselves to follow you.
- I've almost completely forgotten about Facebook.
- Celebrities and musicians have worse grammar and spelling than Rosemary Kennedy.
- My most interesting "tweet" to date was calling James Van Praagh a douche... because he is.
- I was almost hit by a car "tweeting" on my iPhone while crossing the street. Who said social networking never killed anyone? (That's right... this guy did.)
- Trust me, no one gives four shits about the pajamas you stayed up all night sewing for your cat.
- I considered starting a band called "The Tweatles" and all of our song lyrics would be 140 characters or less.
- Swine Flu was created by the United States government to drive down the price of tacos. (Non pork-based tacos)
- "Tweeting" "twittering" "tweets" and "twits" are all incredibly stupid words.

I've seen a lot (somehow all related to twitter) about what people don't and do care to hear. Like there's some kind of limit on what people want to know from your twitter. I saw someone bitching on twitter about how her friends should stop twittering about their hobbies (LARP) because she didn't care about it. It only took me a week or so to stop following her because it made me self-conscious, like my tweets about my sculptural work would be judged.
I only follow people on Twitter when I actually want to see their minutia. I like that. I like those little stolen glimpses into people's lives. It makes me feel awkward when I suspect my choices are being judged over something like Twitter.

Please remember to look both ways when crossing the road, I wouldn't want to have to look elsewhere for my shits and giggles in the morning.
A small nugget of advice (however poor), the only numbers that really matter are those in your bank account. Strive to follow people are going to add value to your professional and personal life (business contacts, fellow writers, content providers and hookers).
And attract those who will add value. It's a little selfish, i know, but it works a treat as a building block for the likeminded people of "social media" ...shudder...I hate that expression!

Instead of Ponzi Scheme, these crisis days would suggest new names, like Madoff Scheme, Mortgage Scheme... In the end it's the same, right?
