From the YBNBY Nature Desk...Giant leatherback turtles, start your flippers. It's time to head home.
This time each year, leatherback turtles begin the incredible 3,700 mile journey from the frigid foraging grounds of Nova Scotia to their sun-dappled breeding grounds in the Caribbean. How they find their way each year is astounding to me. I need a Map Quest printout to find Husky Stadium when I go home each year.
National Geographic sponsors The Great Turtle Race. They have specific turtles that are "racing." The beasts are sponsored and named and everything.
There is also a website that you can make a donation to help with research and conservation of the leatherbacks. A noble cause if you ask me.
Somehow -- I don't really know how, could be GPS, could be magic, beats me -- the turtles can be tracked for the journey and followed on the magical turtle map.
I'm rooting for Backspacer. I female with a lot of spunk. She's five feet long, three feet nine inches wide and a svelte 825 pounds. Why? Well, Backspacer is sponsored by Pearl Jam. How do you think I know about this? Here's what I suggest. Grab the other folks in your office and gamble on this. Get a pool going. You think March Madness pools are fun? Wait till you're betting on a 3,700 mile turtle race. Mayhem. No better race to gamble on that I can think of.
God speed giant turtles. May Triton be with you in your quest.

Hey J-Dub... You win money...
Have you gone back to the Turtle race website to check? Your turtle is the winner. Think she deserves a commemorative post, huh?
I did see that. If there is one thing I can do, it's shrewdly select which leatherback turtle will win a 3,700 mile race. It's a gift.
