The most "celebrated graphic novel of all time."
20+ years to bring it to the screen.
Finally, Watchmen is released.
Judging by the lines at the theater I went to early this evening, it'll make a lot of money. Least this weekend.
Judging by the audience response throughout the movie, I'm not sure if it will make much after.

What's the point of the Happy Face with the bloody arrow (or whatever)?
sooooooooooooooooooo shitttttty, it had all the terrible cliches of superhero movies, hated the acting, it was so long too, i wanted to leave. they tried to sell it as a normal comic book movie, like superman or xmen or something, but the book isnt really like that and shouldnt have been interpreted that way. i really kinda liked the book though, it was much more interesting. the one thing i think the movie did do a good job with was changing the ending with the uhhh dr. manhattan thing, better than what the novel had. and there was so much awkward blue penis, it was distracting in a sexualorientationquestioning kinda way. funny sex scene though, they really went all out with the r-rating, i mean damn. the theater was getting warm
I'm pissed that i have to wait one more week to see it >:(
normally we get new movies either one week before they open in the US or the same day... but not the one im WANT to see. crap
Can't wait for the DVD Extras! Apparently the Pirate Comic is waiting, 3 hours of footage just isn't enough!!
Personally, I thought it was great and bad at the same time. It looked amazing, the effects were spectacular and it was edited great.
As a fan of the novel, I think Zack did a fabulous job trying to stick to the characters, the story and everything good about the book.
That said, I think this is it's downfall.
He stuck too close to what fans of the book hold dear and not enough to what the rest of the movie watching public want to see. The result is a long, long movie with many parts that the audience I was in found laughable...but they shouldn't have. (the sex scene between in Archie. The scenes on Mars.)
I wasn't a fan of a lot of the actors but the guy playing Comedian and the guy playing Rorschach, were really good. Exactly what I imagined.
I too can't wait for the DVD. Not only do I hear it will have the tale of the black freighter, but I hear it will have the original (novel) ending plus the other footage that made the first cut of the movie 4 hours.
I didn't mind the ending change. I thought ending the way they did, who they blamed it on made sense.
I'm going to preemptively post my thoughts because I'm pretty sure I know what I'm going to think when I see it tomorrow. I think the sex scene sounds hilarious, the music sounds misplaced, and the ending... well, that I'll have to see to comment on. I don't mind so much that they changed it but I'm not sure I'll appreciate exactly what they did.
That being said, I'm also imagining there was not enough blue penis for my tastes.
You don't actually have to wait until Watchmen comes out on DVD to see Tales of the Black Freighter. It comes out on DVD March 24. Woo hoo.

SPOILER ALERT!!!!
I finally figured out what the happy face was about:
"A bloodstained Smiley badge is featured as the most prominent motif and recurring piece of imagery in Alan Moore's 1986 comic series Watchmen, as well as its 2009 film adaptation. The badge belongs to a murdered "Adventurer" (Hero) known as The Comedian and prominently features a line of red blood crossing over the Smiley's left eye mimicking the position a clock face set at five minutes to midnight (another motif of the Comics) bears. In later reissues and reprints of the comic series, the Bloodstained Smiley Badge, particularly the left eye, became a symbol for the series as a whole and serves as the cover art to the paperback graphic novel."
There was even more Blue Penis in when you watched in an IMAX theatre
And that scene with multiple Mr Manhattan's? My GF was all over that - she totally wanted some multiple Blue Penis action!
I don't know what y'all are smoking, but this was a pretty good movie. It was a smart film with smart themes made from a smart graphic novel. It turned the cliche comic book hero idea completely on its head. It challenged the idea that people who wear masks and fight crime are moral people, and that human nature is what it is. Even "super heroes" have complexes and issues and dark parts of themselves (that's also why Dark Knight was so good)
The sex scene was hilarious though, but I'm pretty sure it was awkward on purpose.
As for it being too long, they tell you how long it's going to be in the newspaper or online or at the ticket booth. If 163 minutes is too long for you to pay attention, wait for it to come out on DVD.
I loved it. And I can certainly go on about all the things about it that didn't work. But it was sooo much better than I ever thought it would be.
The trailers for the film have been amazing, and seeing the opening credits sequence online made me really want to go see it, but now I'm not so sure. It has been getting so many bad reviews. ebert even calls it 'odd' and this video has a lot of other comments about it- form critics to youtube fan videos http://tinyurl.com/d4odpj. Should I see it in the theaters? Wait to rent? Or maybe not bother at all?
Actually, Ebert gave it a pretty glowing 4-star review. What was "odd" was Ebert's ramblings about quantam physics and Dr. Manhattan on his blog.
It's a very polarizing film. If you're a fanboy you'll either love it for how faithful it is or hate it for how different it is from the book.
If you've never read the book you'll either love it for how different it is from any other superhero movie you've seen or you'll hate it for how it's hard to follow and seems to require reading the book to "get it".
I went to go see Watchmen over the weekend. Sadly, I can't recommend it.
The anti-Hero concept was interesting, but thin. The neon blue penis flopping about in about a dozen or so scenes was pretty uncalled for...especially since Dr. Manhattan has clothes and is dressed in about 33 % of his scenes. So why does he have to be naked in the other 66% of the scenes? And why does the camera view have to show his head, torso, and then continue to about mid thigh? Oh that's right, if you don't go below the waist, then no penis shot! And that would be a shame not to get that into the shot. At least make it erect so there is some humor to it. Nope just flacid blue penis...
I think the Director just really loves men...particularly naked men. Perhaps blue men...
I think this movie qualifies as soft-core gay superhero porn.
Dr. Manhattan was shown naked in the comic to express how he no longer thought in human terms or held human views. The film was just trying to be faithful to that. I actually thought the movie was going to suck, so I was pleasantly surprised by it. There were parts that could have been better, but I would definitely recommend it.
