In These Lost Times
four_toed_statue_ybnby.jpg
It's no secret that I'm a fan of Lost. I've devoted so much of my brain capacity to it that I've lost months of memory, developed a stutter, and drool when I get to close to a running microwave. Even last night, as my girlfriend and I caught this week's episode on my DVR, I began drawing diagrams and explaining theoretical quantum physics after she asked the all-too-common, "what the hell is going on?"

And this is what makes Lost the best show on television. You never know what's going to happen. Main characters die. The universe gets twisted and rebuilt. And it's the hope of all viewers that this is leading toward some sort of ultimate resolution. And for this day in age, it's the perfect show.

Boldly featuring a horrific plane crash a mere 3 years after 9/11, Lost seemed to tweak our sensibilities. Further, it featured a former Iraqi Republican Guard as a sympathetic main character just as our country was fighting against his people. And finally, now that we've hit some of our darkest hours, and things have become so chaotic and tangled, (or the record is skipping) we're hoping our leaders are making the best decisions and cutting through the mess in order to put us back on track.

It's these reasons that make Lost one of the finest hours on television. Poignant, interesting, and it forces you to think. Now if someone can explain to me what the hell that four-toed statue is, I'd be a happy man.

How can you see his toes in that picture? :)

We saw the toes of that statue in an earlier episode. It sure looks Egyptian, which might explain why Richard has the black eyeliner.

I don't know, but I sure can't wait to find out. I'm assuming the flaming arrows come from the same time period as this statue.

The black eyeliner line was the best of the season!!! I must admit that my heart skipped a beat when Sawyer saw Kate by the van.

Is anyone bothered by the fact that they landed in the 70s?

First off that decade sucked.
There was a huge recession, oil problems.
The hippies died and plunged into drugs.
Disco.
Leisure suits.
Bell bottoms.
Pet rocks.
Abba.
No wonder Ben came along and wiped out Darma. He's Gorden Gecko as far as I'm concerned. He had to destroy those Darma folks, to save them from living with Bee Gees records, lava lamps, shag rugs, 8 tracks and Happy Days.

(I'll give the 70s a plus on Star Wars & Jaws though)

On a less serious note, I guess this was a way to get the show to start fresh. The current (2004 year) storyline had run its course once the 6 left. Now they can explore the past and create new stuff to confuse the hell out of us. If Jack & Co had landed back in the present, they'd have to pick up where they left off. And I for one have no interest in seeing Bernice and Rose whining.

Don't get me wrong, I still like the show. I love getting LOST.
But it's a bit of a mind fuck right now. Trying to keep up with who's who and when we last saw someone and remembering story lines from 3 seasons ago. Shit, I'm looking at background scenery right now for clues "Was that a bamboo tree Sawyer just walked past? Bamboo isn't strong, does that mean sawyer has a muscular disease that renders him mute and deaf"
(That doesn't make sense, on purpose.)

I'm gonna call this right now.
The island is a figment of Hurley's imagination. Wizard of Oz like.
He's knocked out in a coma and all the others (main character & minor ones) are either his doctors, specialists or friends and family. Everyone wanting to care for the millionaire.
The show will end with everyone getting off the island. Cut to Hurley waking from his coma, like Dorothy.
Vincent is toto.

Think about it.

Isn't that how St. Elsewhere ended? It was all some autistic kids dream?

Interesting theory, Baierman. Especially since Ben took on the name Henry Gale for a while. Heck, if the writers of Lost read this blog, I think they'll decide its a perfect way to end.

The 70s may have sucked..but why you gotta lump ABBA in with the rest of that crappy stuff? ABBA is the shit.. I'm kind of hoping American Idol does an ABBA week. How cool would that be?

said CindylovesScara on March 7, 2009 7:13 AM.

Abba, American idol? Fine by me, I avoid that show like the flu

said Baierman on March 7, 2009 8:50 AM.

I'll predict that

1. Dr. Marvin Candle is Jin and Sun's kid.
2. Jack is Jacob
3. There will be a stupid spin off series. (I'd make it a comedy)

Brother Bill...
Your number 1 is impossible because Of the fact that Jin (and probably Sun) now on the island (1974) and we have seen in flashbacks (this season!)that Candle is on the island and old at the moment when Daniel is working for Dharma, building the Orchid. That timeline seems to be now, and remember Candle was waking up to make his film and he came to a crying baby. I would assume that is young miles being born or perhaps even jin (LONGSHOT!)
But then again who am I? your probably right. PS anybody else just LOVE suliet? cause I do.

wait, juliet? hell no! she bothers me. well actually not really, she did kinda rid the show of excess romanticism later on in the show. but at the beginning, i thought for sure she was just there to fuck with jack's relationship. but now i see she actually does have a decent role.
and i still have faith the writers know where theyre going with this, although with the introduction of time travel, its getting kinda sketchy and the probability of a kickass mindbending ending that ties it aaaaaallll together is getting slim. heard that, but i wish i didn't hear that.

said notjohndoe2 on March 7, 2009 6:41 PM.

notjohndoe, I totally agree with your take on Juliet. what i was refering to is sawyer+juliet=suliet. I am certainly NOT looking forward to a 4way romance square between jack, sawyer, kate and juilet. Takes away from the real action and the real hero: Sayid. And you are very true about the ending. iam very nervous that this will be a dream or something.

How can Lost be considered the best show on television when Battlestar Galactica is still on?

said Jilly on March 9, 2009 1:59 AM.

Hurley's coma dream, I've been putting out since the begining to friends that the whole show is the feavered death dream of Walt's dog just before being put down. That would be the perfect ending to this mash of unfinished storylines and crossed continum lines. Some one please put a bullet in BEN!!!!

said mekon12 on March 9, 2009 2:05 PM.

I have to say out of all the most entertaining characters the pinacle truly is Benjamin Linus.

He is just so cool with his dastardly and diabolical plans of death.

And there's just a lot lurking behind the eyes, with those internal cogs of his always whirring. You never know who he'll kill next!
