This ad for Praetorian surveillance systems is in the back of the current issue of Wired. Best I can tell this thing is part of a security software made by L3 communications, a government security contractor.
But the description of the product or software or 3D imaging technology or whatever the heck it is, has me curious. And confused.
Anyone know what the heck they're talking about? Care to explain or guess? [Thanks.]
Copy reads:
Praetorian leaps a full generation beyond constrained 2D systems, giving you fly-through awareness while maximizing your surveillance ROI. You master total situational awareness and immersive 3D tracking, resulting in extraordinary preemptive capabilities.
The site makes it a little clearer.

It's security surveillance. For things like airports, casinos, shipping ports etc. It looks to me like they are offering some software or system of hardware and software that would allow the user to have a 3D view (including flybys etc) of whatever is being kept secure.
Kind of like a 3D shooter maybe. That would be cool.
They completely lost me. WTF? Thanks for the explanation, Annadeus. Probably the only people who understand it will be the ones who actually want to buy it. Baierman, call the customer service number and ask them exactly what they're trying to sell and report back to us, please. :)
The system takes the images from a bunch of 2D cameras and creates a 3D version of the area you're surveilling. You can then do flybys or virtual walkthroughs of your warehouse/airport/docks/etc... and see what is going on.
Master total situation awareness: You know what the f*** is going on.
Immersive 3D Tracking: You can see what the f*** is going on.
extraordinary preemptive capabilities: You can stop people doing whatever the f*** they were going to do.
Typically, you have 3-4 security cameras that overlap, while one pair of eyes can watch one camera. Now these overlapping cameras are used to create a virtual 3D representation of what is happening in real time. Now you have 1 pair of eyes on one image that shows the output of several cameras at once. Plus, instead of having several officers do the rounds in a traditional sense, one officer can do a virtual walkthrough faster, and from the security station. He can do the rounds for several officers.
VERY cool system. This is how porn will be shot one day soon.

Done and done. The wife and I have this setup. We use it for 'what-if' analysis.
Thanks Lost & Annadeus for explaining the jargon.
This isn't another on the sly ad for the new Terminator movie by any chance?
Allow me to translate:
"Praetorian is a cool as shit Doom-like game but using your own yard, in which you can track and shoot bad guys, while claiming it's part of your job description. It also plays creepy music when a bad guy is there, so you can fuck him up real good with a big-shit remote gun, and stuff. Use special cheat codes for infinite lives.
Available now for PS3, XBox 360 and Wii"
Good question bob. I have no idea.
IF it were true, that'd be really interesting.
What port is that btw? I could see it being Vancouver. Then again those red cranes. Is red the standard? Perhaps! But then again, No! YBNBY. Riddlers yo0...
