There is nothing on earth more threatening to the status quo than an educated woman. If these women grow up to be able to take care of themselves (and more importantly, their children), then the men might have to treat them as human, stop beating them, and maybe even take a bath. In other words, they may have to make the effort to become worthy of keeping a family. The horror!

I agree with the parents, but I would PROBABLY have suggested she change to studying something SAFER than chemistry like Latin.
