What your social network tells you about your preferences

Over the last six months, YouTube has really implemented a lot of improvements - HD quality, widescreen, enhanced embeds, and a much improved system of recommendations.

Occasionally I'll go in and browse what they offer, and most of the things they recommend to me make perfect sense - Watchmen movie trailers, 80s music videos, classic British comedy, viral commercials.

And then, today, YouTube recommended to me the above. And I thought it was just too perfect not to share. WTF?

Reader Mail
p.o.mailbox.jpg
We have a backroom here at the home office that used to house a Foosball table. We accidentally set fire to it during a game of "Let's see which burns quicker" and since then the room has been nothing but a receptacle for unwanted filth. (Sort of like your mother). The filth I speak of are bins and bins of reader mail that's been sent to us over the years. And while we had every intention of writing back, we chose to simply take the presents you sent us and discard the rest. Strangely, Scaramouch makes me open all the envelopes with white powder inside of them as well. We decided it was time to put a dent into the mail situation and start writing back, after all, we need a place to put our new keg-a-rator. Let's begin...

It's like Digg, but Neater

200901271625.jpg

Our good friend Alex at Neatorama has launched a major new upgrade that adds a community aspect to his very always entertaining site. With the "Upcoming Queue" now anyone can write their own story for submission, and the community will vote it up or down, depending on whether it's "neat or not". It's an interesting concept, and it'll be especially fascinating to see if it increases the quality of great posts that Neatorama is known for, or if it suffers from the kind of abuse that happens over at Digg.

At one point, I thought about doing something like that over here, but then I realized ehh, sounds like a lot of work. So I suggest we put Alex's implementation to the test. A free "Loyal 77" button to the first person here who submits one of our stories and gets it to the top of the queue :)

Urban Exploration
ue_underground_ybnby.jpg
It's a simple fact of being human, tell us not to do something or go somewhere, and we want it more. And it's these desires that drive today's urban explorers, a group whose main goal is to sneak into and explore abandoned buildings, tunnels, and other man-made structure. As an added thrill, these places are usually hard-to-find, unknown by the general public, and more often than not illegal to venture into. I've done a bit of this type of exploration in some not-so-abandoned train tunnels in New York City, WWII batteries in San Francisco, and forts along the Rhode Island coast. It's definitely an interesting experience, and there's a wealth of information about it on the internet. Check out How Stuff Works' Podcast on Urban Exploration, or the absolutely fantastic show on the History Channel called Cities of the Underworld. And to learn more about the society and the rules that go into this practice (as well as find groups and explorations near you), check out Jinx Magazine, and Urban Explorers Network.

The Hypnobra
hypnoanix200.gif Men just don't pay enough attention to women's breasts. To alleviate this problem, Enlighted presents the Hypnobra, just one of many bra styles that light up the night. I can't think of a more obvious way to say "Look at me!"

Consider this the first of a series of Valentines Day gift suggestions. You've got three weeks. I would not recommend this particular gift for a lady you just started dating.

404 Error

Whoops! We're not sure if it was your fault or ours (probably yours, we're good that way) but you've encountered a FATAL ERROR!!! Or at least, a pretty grumpy one.

Specifically the Latvians who run our server are telling us in a weird accent "Smarty error: [in evaluated template line 6]: syntax error: unrecognized tag 'mtfeed' (Smarty_Compiler.class.php, line 580), Comrade!". Ain't life a bitch.

If you want to vent, email our slacker of a webmaster. Otherwise, we'd suggest going back, using search, or clicking around aimlessly on this page like a moron.

Have fun.
