"2008 Academy Award Predictions and Predilections": Once again, Joe tries his hand at picking this year's Oscar winners.
This year's Oscar nominations display nothing more than what a weak year it was at the movies. But even with the slim crop of films from which to choose, the Motion Picture Academy once again proves itself to be asleep at the switch with some mind-boggling inclusions and omissions.
"Inkheart" *1/2 (out of four): Despite an interesting premise, big-budget effects and an award-winning cast, "Inkheart" falls completely flat. Perhaps it's true that some things are better left to the imagination.

"Inkheart", based on the book by Cornelia Funke, has a promising premise. A rare few called "silvertongues" are blessed with the ability to bring stories to life when they read them aloud. Brendan Fraser plays one such individual, a rare-book dealer named Mo Folchart. While reading to his daughter one night, he unknowingly releases a cast of characters from the titular tome. Consequently, his wife, Resa (Sienna Guillory), is pulled into the book.
"Underworld: Rise of the Lycans" 1/2* (out of four): Bad even for a movie about vampires and werewolves, this "Underworld" prequel should, at the very least, be the final nail in this franchise's (ahem) coffin.

You have to appreciate a few things about "Underworld: Rise of the Lycans", the third movie in the moderately lucrative vampire-vs-werewolf franchise:
1) The original director and original star (husband and wife combo Len Wiseman and Kate Beckinsale) decided to bail on the series.
2) Michael Sheen (the indisputably good actor from "The Queen" and "Frost/Nixon") did not.
3) The filmmakers made this third installment a prequel.
