Cold Satriani
Remember that feeling you got when you realized most of Led Zepplin's first album was a complete rip-off of older and unknown artists? It looks like another British band might be pulling the same shenanigans. What do you think? Did Coldplay rip off Joe Satriani?

I don't know about plagerism, all I have to say is damn Coldplay is a bunch of pussies.

I know guitar nuts have been yelling about this since the Coldplay song came out.

Never liked CP, this is just another reason why I guess.

I'm sorry but you need a lot more similarity to convince me of foul play. Just four similar chords?!! How many musicians have made music with those chords? What about the rest of the song? Not only that, but the Coldplay version has a completely different musical arrangement and rhythm. Sounds like a guitarist generating attention for his music. Thanks to this scandal, I've listened to more Joe Satriani in the last 2 minutes than I have in the last 27 years!

Sounds the same to me personally...
I personally cant stand CP, but that doesn't mean i'm quick to write them off. Maybe this track was done as a tribute to Satriani's work in mind, short of name-dropping maybe this was the best they could come up with. Or maybe it actually is a black & white case of stolen artistic merit...
As long as CP actually got either rights or permission to use Satriani's riff then there's no harm done. Even a simple thank you to Satriani in the CD inlay booklet for 'Musical Inspiration' or similar would suffice.
Musicians have been doing this for hundreds of years, from Avril Lavigne to Zepplin, Elvis to Slipknot, Eminem to Ministry of Sound - a large percentage of musicians have used another artists original piece with their own interpretation & personalisation, whether it be the whole track or just a part of it..
It doesn't exactly make them any less of an artist, if it did then every musician that has EVER performed or recorded a 'cover version' should be under the microscope & written off in alot of peoples eyes.

This isn't the first time anyone has called plagiarism on Coldplay.

Also, they suck.

Most music is created from the influences made by other musicians... but a blatant rip off is quite another thing. I too have just seen a couple of videos from Satriani and don't like him too much (in the 5 or 6 song I've just heard) his playing seems too repetitive and soulless. Coldplay aren't the greatest band ever but a do like some of their songs quite a lot, shame they fall back on plagiarism.

Uh, sorry. This smells a little like John Fogerty having to prove in court that he couldn't possibly have plagiarised HIMSELF w/ "Old Man Lives Down the Road" vs. "Run Through the Jungle" in a case against Island Records.

Rock music is three chords and a guitar. If it aint derivative, it aint rock and roll. This doesn't even sound all that derivative to my ear.

So, no. Not suspicious in the least. But thanks for playing!

You know what the hardest part about listening to Coldplay is?

Telling your dad you're gay. (not that there is anything wrong with that)

That was a good one Cripes.

well, here's the girl answer...I like the coldplay version better--it's about the lyrics (not usually a big fan)...I was listening to it alot this semester while studying Russian history (yes, I'm a masochist)--the lyrics fit perfectly with the downfall of the Nicholas II, the last tsar.

yes, that was completely non sequitor...but now you'll be thinking about it the next time you hear the song.

said sarcastic one on December 9, 2008 6:27 PM.

When I listen to the song(s) they are both pretty basic rhythm wise so overlap is kind of inevitable. You can't copyright 'the backbeat' for example. They got a similar tempo and melody, at least for the stretch we hear but I honestly don't think Coldplay heard that song then stole it.

Zep on the other hand. Sheee-iiit. Those guys stole the lyrics and the whole hog... Still rocked, might've paid a little to the old masters....

Kind of agree with what Swayze said, that's the tradition, there are only so many chords...
