So, I finally got an iPhone

iphone1.jpg

I finally broke down and pledged never to get angry about crap battery life. So, I have a new toy, i thought I'd get the assembled wisdom of YBNBY to help me load it up. So, recommendations for cool apps in comments? Make sure you let me know if they are free or paid. Try not to recommend terrible "ooh, it's a pretend lighter" video clips. I want smart, intelligent apps that make my life better, plus a few fun games.

You absolutely need to get Mach Dice. I believe it costs $1.

You'd be amazed at how often having an unlimited supply of rollable electronic dice comes in handy.

I am an app whore

iflix
- to manage your netflix account if you netflix

mobile photos
- if you have a flickr. you can upload from the phone which is the best reason to have it

trism
- is a fun time wasting game. Wife played it for a month straight

GPS tracker
- tracks your path and uploads to their server which you can grab the code for posting on a webpage in a google map. Bummer is you have to keep the app running so no locking the phone. i put it in my backpack on bike rides.

pandora and remote for sure.
- no splainin needed

weather bug
- much better than the default app

air sharing
- lets you use your iphone as a usb drive over wireless. Cool but only works over wireless.

line rider
- hours wasted already and works great with the touch screen.

toy bot diaries
- unique game that uses touch and the accelerometer

yp mobile
- local events and directory

ineedstuff
- a grocery shopping app that uses location and syncs with other users. My wife and I love this app. Very well made

I have bought lots of games. Monkey ball is fun but hard.

once you jailbreak I got tons more.

Have fun

Simplify Media is an app that you install on your phone and home computer, thus linking your digital music collection, drm-free to your phone, anywhere you can connect Wifi, Edge or 3G. It also works computer-to-computer. Also connect to friends music collections for streaming. Absolutely my favorite app.

Nice. I just got one a couple of months back. I'm curious to know what the apps that worth paying for are. I've tried out most of the good free ones. Here's what I'd recommend:

Shazam - Might be the coolest app out there. I was in a shoe store and heard a cool song playing on their radio that I didn't know. Held my iphone in the air and Shazam told me what the song was.

NY Times has a really nice free app that downloads the day's paper to your phone, really cleanly formatted for reading on the iphone screen.

Wordpress has a great app for blog posting. Not sure if MT has one too.

I second Raj's recomendation of Urban Spoon. It's neat the way it works.

2 Across is a nice free Crossword puzzle game.

Cubes is a great and severely addictive game and for only $2.99 it's the cheapest addiction I could think of.

Pandora (Free) - Definitely a great app if you're into discovering new music.

Urban Spoon (Free) - Users your location to suggest restaurants in your area.

Shazam (Free) - Hold it up to a speaker and it'll tell you what song you're listening to.

I'll third Pandora and Shazam. If you use any IM programs like yahoo and messenger, you might enjoy Palringo, which combines them all into one. If you like scoffing at horoscopes, iscopes might be just for you. It'll even tell you the horoscope for you pets, and if your gay. Because, as we all know, being gay gives you a different horoscope. If you don't like horoscopes, but you're chinese, you could try iChing. It's biggest fall back is trying to interpret what the hell it's saying. If your inner fortune teller is dying to be released forth into a scepticle world, try iTarot or Touch Tarot. One of them costs something. Finally, perhaps you've had a long day and can't thing of something to contribute to YBNBY. Download Facts. It is exactly what it says it is, but a lot of the facts make you think wonder. For example: Facts says that to the human taste bud, Zima is indistuingishable from zebra urine. To be a fact, someone had to prove this. Someone find me the University of the Congo pledge who really wanted in Delta Theta Pi.

Does this mean you'll be updating the YesButMoBlog? There are some great pics on there...but nothing recent...

Paul....everyone knows that if you chug enough zebra piss even a Zima tastes okay...
(god...why did we used to drink those things? that should have given our "underage and happy to have gotten past the bouncers" status away....)

My advice is to get the book: iPhone The Missing Manual. I bought mine from a used book store. There is an updated version out, but the general info is the same as the original book. A few of the great tips I learned was how to send pictures to other cell phones and some shortcuts in typing.

I'm with all the guys that mentioned Shazam... such a GREAT program.

Remote--you can control the music on your computer with your iPhone.

Shakespeare--all the works of Shakespeare on your phone. For no other reason than to tell people you have all of Shakespeare at your fingertips.

iWant--locate restaurants, bars, coffee shops, ATMs, car rentals, etc. within a few miles of your location. Great if you're travelling in an unfamiliar city.

And they're all FREE! I love a good bargain.

The top apps I'd recommend:

i.TV (free): you can put in your favorite shows or actors and see what's on that night or in the upcoming week, additionally can look at movies that are out...

but for movies I prefer:

Movies (by Flixter) (free): This app uses your current location to look at movie times at theatres near you. Additionally you can watch the preview and buy tickets online.

Wikipanion (free): an easy online encyclopedia for when at dinner you get in a discussion about how many people are so sensitive to light that it makes them sneeze (35%, I happen to be one of them)

CityTransit (NYC subway guide) ($2.99): This is great for me, a displaced Texas girl who has ended up in the big apple. it has an offline subway map, will tell you if you're wandering the streets where the nearest station is, as well as delays and other advisories for any line. very handy.

Yelp (free): based on your location finds nearby restaurants, bars, coffee houses, gas stations, banks, drugstores, etc... additionally has great reviews (by other users) and, unlike UrbanSpoon, it is not just limited to specific cities, you can use it anywhere in the US, works in correlation with their website, yelp.com which is great too :)

eventful (free): allows you to put in your favorite performers (bands, comedians, etc) and it informs you when they are in town, additionally can choose your favorite venues and see who is performing in the upcoming weeks.

and of course, like the others, i love the Pandora App. (free)

as to games, i paid for:

Tangrams ($2.99): take the pieces and make the shape, basic, easy, passes the time

Hidden Expedition ($0.99): lists items to find in a picture, haven't played much, but i like the games like it online.

Sodoku ($2.99): for when i can't get a hold of my USA Today.

and there ya have it! hope someone out there likes these too! and i'm always looking for good free games, just haven't had much luck.
