Name that Rockstar (70s version)

Time for another "name that silhouette" competition, and this time we're actually giving away a prize!

The theme of this T shirt from our friends at ChopShop is "Rock Stars 1972-1982", and we have one of the T shirts to give away. I've decided that these things are still best when we solve them collaboratively, so here are the rules: I'm going to give this T Shirt to the person who, in my opinion, makes the best contribution. That may be the person who guesses the most right, or it may be the person who gets the hardest number. It's spurious, biassed, and unquestionable - OK, are we all clear? I just didn't want any complainers.

Here's a numbered version to make it easier. And the T shirt is now available for pre-order on the Chop Shop site. (Ps, on their site they claim there's 31 silhouettes, but I only count 30. Let me know if I missed one and where it is.)

Hmmm..all I wanna know, Scaramouch is which silhouette is that famous photo of Bowie going down on Mick Ronson's guitar?

said Dave's World on October 7, 2008 9:21 AM.

I think you might be onto something there - T shirts of Rockstars getting down to it - Mick Jagger, Marianne Faithful and Mars Bar - Led Zeppelin and the Red Snapper.

Miss C - I think you and I should collaborate on a Porn Stars of the 70s T shirt. I'm sure Chop Shop would love to sell one of those :)

said Scaramouch on October 7, 2008 9:30 AM.

Thanks,
I've gone '70's rock starlet mode myself.

said Dave's World on October 7, 2008 9:42 AM.

Hey, I just write about them. I have no idea what porn stars really looked like!

But the 70s rock stars... I could get down with that, but since you're giving a prize away, I assume I'm ineligible.

said Miss Cellania on October 7, 2008 9:46 AM.

Hmmm...don't know why Britt Ekland is not overriding mentrual girl!

Trying to change the photo!

You can delete this post later, but when you click on my name, the older photo remains!

said Dave's World on October 7, 2008 9:53 AM.

While I absolutely love guessing on these chopshop entries, I'm afraid I won't be much help on this one.

Here are my guesses, though:
#13 the dude from Dire Straits
#19 Billy Joel
#30 might be John Bonham from Zeppelin?

Also, your picture is different from the one on chopshop's page. The snake dude (#15) is on the wrong side.

said Bluesfella on October 7, 2008 10:00 AM.

Scar - Obviously some things have been moved around on your picture versus the one on ChopShop, (perhaps to fit better and get the numbers in?) but it appears that there is a guy with a standing microphone on the left side of the ChopShop pic that was replaced on yours with the snake dude, but he wasn't moved anywhere else.

Did that make sense?

said Tim on October 7, 2008 11:00 AM.

It did - the image I'm using is the one ChopShop sent me, so they must have changed the image inproduction. But let's go with the one that's printed here for the sake of the competition.

said Scaramouch on October 7, 2008 11:18 AM.

OK, here's a start.

1. Gene Simmons
2. Roger Daltrey
6. Pat Benatar (could be Debbie Harry)
7. Crystal Gayle
8. Stevie Wonder
10. Morrissey
11. Pete Townsend
19. Billy Joel
21. Ozzy Osbourne
28. Elvis Costello
29. Michael Stipe (REM)
30. Neil Peart

said Tim on October 7, 2008 11:20 AM.

I'm really just guessing on these. Some ideas ...

4. David Bowie
15. Maybe Jim Morrison (did he ever perform with a snake?)
17. Rod Stewart
22. Stevie Nicks

said Tim on October 7, 2008 11:49 AM.

1. Brian May from Queen
2. James Brown
5. Jim Croche
6. Debbie Harry
7. Joan Baez
8. Gary Newman
9. That guy from Kansas?
10. Liam Gallagher...doh! Liam isn't '70's! Joe Cocker?
11. Pete Townsend
15. Alice Cooper
17. Steven Tyler
19. Rod Stewart
21. Bob Marley
22. Stevie Nicks
23. Patti Smith
24. Lou Reed? naw..Sid Vicious?
29. Bowie or is it Elvis Costello? doh! Elvis is '80's, so Bowie Thin White Duke?

This is all really just a Rorschach Inkblot test of sorts, eh?

said Dave's World on October 7, 2008 12:48 PM.

Who the heck is the guy with the Cello? The only thing that came to my mind was ELO, but Jeff Lynne didn't play the cello - I think that was Hugh MacDowell of Mike Alberquque, but that's pretty obscure even for Chop Shop.

(Full disclosure, I don't have the answers yet - I wanted to hold off on getting that list so I could partake in the fun)

said Scaramouch on October 7, 2008 1:01 PM.

I don't know, Laura. Some of those are really out there.

I think you could be on target with 6, 7, 9, 11, 15, 22, 23 and 24.

said Tim on October 7, 2008 1:06 PM.

Oh, I get it now!
It's The Entire Osmond Family Reunion Special!

What's that?
You want us to name every single Osmond? FINE!

Ok, Donny & Marie,... Jimmy, hmmmm.....Merrill, ...Olive, Dad Osmond, ...er..Mitt Romney, The Mormon Tabernacle Choir,...uh Joseph Smith?

people. remember its 1972-82. no stipe, morrissey… etc. also no repeats from rockStar, the previous design.

said chopshop on October 7, 2008 2:29 PM.

Chopshop - Thanks for the tip. I will replace Stipe and Morrissey from my list. BUT, I was listening to both in 81-82 ... so they definitely fit the timeframe.

said Tim on October 7, 2008 2:37 PM.

true enough… but i try to never slip one in on their first release or anything like that. its more a sense of when that artist was really embraced by the public. i think Chronic Town (REM) came out in 81, but that was just an EP and they were a staple on the college music scene by around 84 with more commercial success toward the 90's.

said chopshop on October 7, 2008 3:08 PM.

OK, I'm with you. I'll have to find the results from the RockStar competition.

said Tim on October 7, 2008 3:35 PM.

Scaramouch - I think Jeff Lynne did play cello on stage sometimes. I think that you've got that one. I'm pretty sure 11 is NOT townshend, the hair is wrong. I expect to see Springsteen and Angus Young here as well, but I'll be damned if I can place them anywhere.

I've also noticed that the theme is 'Rebel Rock'. That should narrow things a little.

said Tim on October 7, 2008 3:42 PM.

TIM last list:

no daltrey, bowie, baez, may, morrissey, townshend, neilsen, meat loaf, cash, stipe or bonham.

patti is not 23.

LAURA last list:

no May, James Brown (my bad), Croche, Baez, Newman, Kansas, Gallagher, Cocker, Townsend, Tyler, Stewart, Nicks, Reed, Bowie or Thin White Duke. who is thin white duke?

elvis costello’s biggest critically acclaimed albums came out pre 82 (my aim is true is 77).

my prediction is that nobody figures out 23, 27 or 5.

said chopshop on October 7, 2008 3:46 PM.

angus on last one

said chopshop on October 7, 2008 4:28 PM.

I gotta bolt for awhile gang. Here is my list so far ... (not very good, I'm afraid) Question marked items mean it's a wild guess on my part.

1. Gene Simmons
2. Leo Sayer?
3.
4. Steven Tyler? Iggy Pop?
5. Engelbert Humperdinck
6. Debbie Harry
7. Crystal Gayle?
8. Stevie Wonder
9.
10. Joe Strummer
11. Johnny Rotten? Bruce Springsteen?
12.
13.
14.
15. Alice Cooper
16. Jeff Lynne (ELO)
17.
18. Jeff Beck?
19. Billy Joel
20.
21. Bob Marley
22.
23.
24. Tom Petty
25.
26.
27.
28. Elvis Costello
29.
30. Neil Peart

Let's get some input from others around here, eh? Chopshop shouldn't have to give us so many hints.

said Tim on October 7, 2008 5:04 PM.

Chop, I really like those individual pictures you made into iPhone bg's for the previous shirt...any chance you could do that here as well? Some of these are just too hard to make out with the images we have to look at...like #5, is that a cigar? Or a kazoo?

Hey! Maybe they are ALL Bowie at one time or another...which one is his Marianne Faithful as the nun a la Midnight Special duet with Bowie?
"I Got You, Babe!"

said Dave's World on October 7, 2008 7:51 PM.

E - You know, I really thought that was DEVO at first glance, but I didn't think they came out until after 1982. Now that I see the exploded version of the pic, there's really no doubt.

I had Ozzy for 21 originally, but something that Chopshop said early on made me change it ... I think he implied that Laura was right with the Marley guess. If you look at the hair, I really don't think it's Ozzy.

I'll post my updates shortly.

said Tim on October 7, 2008 7:54 PM.

Quite the puzzle. Note to self - if you want to be a recognizable rock star, get a good pose or schtick.

2. Leo Sayer
3. Tommy Shaw
4. Ian Curtis (I think E is right on this, but I don’t know much about this guy)
5.

11. Johnny Thunders
23. Patti Smith - I changed my mind.
26. Van Morrison - guess cause of hat.
29. Tom Waits - cause of hat also.

said E on October 7, 2008 10:59 PM.

E - Yes, that hat on 26 is throwing me a little. I've been looking at Waylon et all, but none of those work either. You may have it with Van Morrison.

23 - I keep flipping between Patti Smith and Chrissie Hynde. The guitar made me change my mind.

22- What's the deal here? I wanna say Dio, but right next to Ozzy? Doesn't make sense. Plus, it looks like there's a ballcap or something (dew rag?) ... and what the hell is the white thing on the left side? I'm lost on this one.

17 - Looks like a Meat Loaf or Bon Scott kinda guy. But I can't place him. Could it be the dude from Foreigner?

9 - Looks like an Alvin Lee or Ronnie Montrose type.

4 and 5 - If you're right on these, and you probably are, I am truly impressed.

I'm still trying to force Bruce Springsteen in somewhere. Did he wear a hat early on kinda like #26?

Hmm!

22 - Tim, I thought that was a chic actually. Maybe its a dude in a cloak. I think that's the track you were on. Could that be Meatloaf?

4 - Not sure. Ian Curtis dressed up a little more. Though he had that posture. Is that dude wearing a cuttoff t shirt? Can't see Ian there. I'm on the fence still.

17 - Could also be Meatloaf. Its a singer. The hair looks off though.

Robin Zander should be in there somewhere. He could be 17 theoretically.

said E on October 8, 2008 12:16 AM.

Deep Purple would fit in this gang too, maybe 22 is Ian Gilliam.

BTW, if you got high in the 70's or early 80's and someone hums the first few notes of Smoke on the Water, you're gonna finish it yourself, thats just an f.a.k. fact.

said E on October 8, 2008 12:33 AM.

E -

22 - I'm still stuck on that white thing on the left side though. What the hell is that?

17 - The hair looks off for Zander, too. His hair wasn't that short.

4 - I'll throw you a curveball here. I thought it was Pat Benatar.

said JohnC on October 8, 2008 1:07 AM.

If you really look at what Chopshop said, though, he said Patti is not 23. Since he did not rule her out in the list, couldn't that imply that Patti is in the list, but not at 23? I don't know, maybe I'm reading too much into his comments. He also doesn't say that my guess of Tom Petty at 24 is wrongm though clearly it is wrong. Could that imply that Tom Petty is somewhere else in the list?

23 - I really think it's a woman because of the way he/she is standing. The only thing that throws me is the shoulders. Honestly, it looks a lot like Jimmy Page, but I think he was in the previous contest.

25 - I don't think that is Tom Petty. Not skinny enough. But my theory above says that he is in the list somewhere, so you could be right. Aren't the buckles on the jacket a clue? I was thinking maybe Neal Schon from Journey. He wore jackets like that all the time.

11 - not Brian Setzer?
20 - not Greg Lake?

22 is killing me ...

said Tim on October 8, 2008 1:17 AM.

Tim, 25 could be off too.

Not positive that 11 and 20 aren't those guys, just not totally 'on board'.

24 HAS to be Sid. I'd bet 1000 mortgages on it.

22 could be Silent Bob, if only he was a rocker.

Finally, for tonight, The Eagles should be on here somewhere, no? That's their time for shizzle. Maybe Joe Walsh solo?...

said E on October 8, 2008 1:48 AM.

Here's a few more thoughts for the night.

25 - Bob Weir
24 - No doubt, it's Sid Vicious

20 - E sayes this is the dude from Moody Blues. I was looking at that originally, but I really associate them more with the 60's, so I ruled them out. Could be wrong.

said Tim on October 8, 2008 2:04 AM.

jul’s last list:

no sayer, May, Reed, Cash, Ronstadt, Harris, Manzarek, Ronson, Prince, Townshend, Hunter, Daltrey, Beck, Lightfoot, Nicks, Robertson, Nugent, Bowie, Bonham. 6 is not patty and 25 is not petty. Holy shit, i cannot beleive you got Drake on 23! i figured nobody would get that.

tims last:

no Sayer, Shaw, Curtis, Fagen, Setzer, Beck, Lake, Howe, Easton and 23 is not hynde and 29 is not costello. look at your first list, there are about 3 on there that are right that have since drifted.

E's list:

no Sayer, Frampton, Curtis, Fagen, Beck, Howard, Taylor, Knotts and no Bonham. 25 is not petty and don knotts would be a truly funny addition. truly impressive on #5.

since the list… tom waits… look to the right. you win 1000 mortgages. no taylor, gilliam, zander, curtis, benetar or meatloaf. sorry about the eagles. i just couldn’t figure who from the band deserved it and when i decided walsh should be here i just couldn’t fit him.

–––––

dudes that should be here but i just didn’t get em in: walsh, elton, stewart and i dropped the ball on james brown. also, many of the guesses here would be eliminated if you look at the previous design as there are no dupes.

i also still think some guesses are out of era, remember i try not to add folks whose careers just began during the period specified. there are some who come close.

not sure if this has been clear, but when i say “no…” that means that those talents are not in the design at all. not just that the specific guess is wrong. when i say, “x is not…” that means the specific guess is wrong.

also hint is that 3, 6, 7 and 27 are the only women here.

crazy that you guys got 23 and 5. i guessed you wouldn’t ever get those. now i am guessing you will never get 27 (although its been mentioned) and 29. from what i see the only ones on here that nobody has even suggested the names of thus far are 2, 11, 29, 22, 20 and 18.

remember to use http://www.flickr.com/photos/chopshopstore/2914091660/sizes/o/. i think its near impossible to get most of these without the hi-res and kudos to all the ones you got before i posted that.

11 is band related to someone else on here.

17 has been mentioned here but not assigned correctly

18 has distinctive facial hair that could not be replicated in silhouette.

20 may be considered by some an 80’s act, but i insist their best work was easily the material from the late 70’s.

22 i think maybe nobody here is into this dude, cause if you know him… you would know this classic outfit from their most noted tour.

29 people may poo-poo him being here, i dropped him in because i insist. kind of like tull on the last tee. he is also right on the edge of the timeline here. biggest years were 79-82.

chop - I put Idol in because I keep trying to force some Generation X, Dead Kennedys or Black Flag into the mix. You know ... Rebel Rockers. Definitely late 70s, but not mainstream so I probably reached there. I expected to see Henry Rollins (Black Flag) but can't get him in there.

I put Rutherford in as a reach because of your 'best work in the 70s' comment. which I would definitely agree with when it comes to Genesis.

I haven't really been able to look at it much today ... I'll look at it more tonight, if there is anything left.

said chopshop on October 8, 2008 2:39 PM.

2 has an afro you know.

17 has been mentioned in this thread before and disappeared but was never correctly assigned. look at the hi-res. it seems obvious to me, especially considering the way he is singing into the mic.

20 considered to have some of the earliest elements of new wave

22 the thing on the side of his head are glasses or shades of a sort.

2 - Phil Lynott

said chopshop on October 8, 2008 4:16 PM.

Dang. He rocked though. Thin Lizzy rulez!

said E on October 8, 2008 4:23 PM.

2. Michael Jackson
17. Leo Sayer
20. Graham Parsons
22 - One of the dudes from Seals and Crofts (shudder)

said E on October 8, 2008 7:05 PM.

E - I was waiting to see which one of us would write Michael down first. I've been thinking that for awhile but didn't see him as a rebel rocker. Besides, he would have been with the Jackson Five during the 'fro years ... and they definitely weren't rebel rockers.

I'm thinking more along the lines of Edwin Starr or something, but I gotta do more research. Just now sitting down to it.

P.S. Did we every really rule out Van Morrison (who I say is more 60's anyway) or Bon Scott for 20?

said Tim on October 8, 2008 7:28 PM.

errr 17, not 20

said Tim on October 8, 2008 7:55 PM.

Could be Bon Scott, Van was in the previous one I believe.

Good luck Tim. I'm swinging at wild pitches at this point.

said E on October 8, 2008 8:01 PM.

Here we go ....

2. Sly Stone
17. Van Morrison
20. Ric Ocasik (pretty sure this is wrong; still looking)
22. Klaus Meine

said Tim on October 8, 2008 9:12 PM.

Damn. Yeah. I can totally see Sly. I think that's it. Good hustle Tim.

said E on October 8, 2008 9:19 PM.

Just making observation here. 20 looks like he's got an acoustic guitar and kind of a pouffy jacket. Can't pin that look. (Moody Blues were on it once though).

Could be the wrong track...

said E on October 8, 2008 9:36 PM.

Yes, but they were predominately late 60's and early 70's. Chop says that this group is considered to be early new wave, mostly known for their 80's hits, but he thinks their 70's work is better.

Initially, I thought The Cars fit into this nicely, but now I'm thinking a little bigger than that. My guess for 20 has changed ...

20. Andy Summers (though I will admit the acoustic has me iffy on this too)

said Tim on October 8, 2008 9:49 PM.

Chop - #20 is Paul Weller. The Jam came out in 76/77 with In The City and they split in 82 with Beat Surrender.

said juls on October 8, 2008 9:55 PM.

Juls - I have Paul Weller on my list of possibilities as well. BUT, how do you reconcile his timeframe with the clue Chop gave that they're best known for their work in the 80's? I don't see them being significant enough on the New Wave scene. (unless you're talking about his Style Council stuff)

said Tim on October 8, 2008 10:10 PM.

E:

no on all. people will not let leo sayer go.

tim:

no to morrison (previous design) and meine

juls:

shit… i was planning on jam being on the 80's one. style council doesn’t really cut it. they should have been on here. them and james brown and joe walsh.

and then there were two.

said chopshop on October 8, 2008 10:19 PM.

Chop - #10 is Johnny Rotten, from the way he is spitting into mic.

My take on #2 is he is wearing a stripey long sleeve shirt with suspenders (braces). If he is not Sayer, Daltrey or Bolan, the only other guy with the 'fro should be (!) Gilbert O'Sullivan...My guess could also be the guy from Grand Funk Railroad.

For #22, I have seen this shot before but cannot place it. He is wearing a leather trench coat. Could be Garcia or some Southern Rocker dude. Or he is The Damned's Dave Vanian or Captain Sensible.

said juls on October 8, 2008 10:22 PM.

tim - The Jam became bona fide non-punk/retro mod rockers (labeled New Wave by english press) in 1980 when they swept NME's readers' poll. So, from 1980 onwards, The Jam really did some great stuff like The Gift album which gave us Start!, That's Entertainment and Town Called Malice.

Style Council would not cut it because he was accused of selling out the working class in Britain.

Earlier I put Steve Marriott because of the hairstyle, something Weller aspired to become all his Mod life.

said juls on October 8, 2008 10:29 PM.

Juls - These are the ones that are known so far ... confirmed by Chop

Thank for the clues Chops. I think this is where we stand now:

1. Gene Simmons
2. Sly Stone
3. Patti Smith
4. Iggy Pop
5. Leonard Cohen
6. Debbie Harry
7. Joni Mitchell
8. Stevie Wonder
9. Tom Petty
10. Joe Strummer
11. Mick Jones
12. Bob Marley
13. Mark Knopfler
14. Mark Mothersbaugh
15. Alice Cooper
16. Jeff Lynne
17.
18. Frank Zappa
19. Billy Joel
20. Andy Summers
21. Ozzy Osborne
22.
23. Nick Drake
24. Sid Vicious
25. Bruce Springsteen
26. Tom Waits
27. Chrissie Hynde
28. Elvis Costello
29. Joe Jackson
30. Neil Peart

We are still working on only two;

17 - which I believe to be Bon Scott
22 - No idea; I really though I had it with Klaus Meine

said Tim on October 8, 2008 11:16 PM.

tim:

no summers, scott or meine. go back to an earlier thought for 20.

juls:

10 is Johnny Rotten?

said chopshop on October 8, 2008 11:37 PM.

Oops, sorry.

20 is Ric Ocasek

said Tim on October 8, 2008 11:46 PM.

I'll be damned.

17 is Johnny Rotten? I gave up on him when we got Sid Vicious

22 is testing the very best of my best Googling skills.

said Tim on October 8, 2008 11:50 PM.

tim - #17 could be steve winwood? Or Tim Buckley

On #22, I see where you're coming from with Meine. I hve met him before and hve seen a photo of him in said trench coat.

said juls on October 8, 2008 11:55 PM.

Ok. So it's 17 and 22 and 17 has been mentioned but not correctly. I think that's the case.

said E on October 9, 2008 12:08 AM.

Good eye with Ric Ocasek (assuming it' right.) DMN!

said E on October 9, 2008 12:10 AM.

Yes, and if I'm reading between the lines ... 17 is definitely Johnny Rotten. He fits all the clues, just slipped through the cracks. Besides, look at the picture.

22 - I've gone everywhere from Candace Night (Rainbow) to Allen Collins (Rossington Collins Band) on this one. I've looked at 50 trench coat rockers ... none seem to fit. I thought I nailed it with Klaus (I even saw the Scorpions 4 times in the early 80s, so I was really kicking myself that I hadn't gotten it earlier), but I was wrong. I've even looked through a bunch of old Judas Priest stuff ... nothing.

From what I can tell, the dude (it is a dude) has long, wavy (or permed) hair, is wearing some kind of small cap and goggles of some kind, and is looking away from the mike in the picture. Plus, you have the trench coat and boots. I thought it was some kind of early Industrial Rock band, but I got nothing.

said Tim on October 9, 2008 12:16 AM.

17 - Ian Hunter

said E on October 9, 2008 12:17 AM.

#17 is Johnny Rotten... This photo is from one of Sex Pistols' early live gig where Rotten was singing to the audience.

cause of the hair

said E on October 9, 2008 12:18 AM.

e - Ian Hunter was ruled out already in one of Juls' early lists.

I don't think that Johnny Thunders has been ruled out yet. He is possible, but more obscure than Johnny Rotten.

said Tim on October 9, 2008 12:26 AM.

Yeah. Your right. Good catch.

Thunders though? He was a guitar guy. Still, could be...

said E on October 9, 2008 12:36 AM.

Posture wise, 17 could totally be Mr. Rotten.

said E on October 9, 2008 12:37 AM.

no thunders or hunter.

said Tim on October 9, 2008 10:54 AM.

Wow, sooooo many entries and only one T shirt to give away. If I could, I'd give three shirts here, with runner up prizes to both E and Tim. But I think we should give this one out to Juls for getting some of the harder ones. (How the hell you got Nick Drake, I will never know)

Juls - as you're not registered (or at least the email associated with your name looks weird) can you email me at webmaster@yesbutnobutyes.com with your details? Other wise, I might have to toss a coin between Tim and E.

Thanks to everyone who participated. Chopshop - please contact me if you're interested in doing an exclusive YBNBY one of these with Porn Stars of the 70s. (I'd also love to see one with "Capes" - ie, superheroes)
