Superman To Be Rebooted. Again.
fleischer.jpgIn what may turn out to be the largest storytelling mulligan in history, the Superman franchise apparently is going to be started over. Again.

The Wall Street Journal quotes Warner Bros. Pictures Group President Jeff Robinov saying:
Superman didn't quite work as a film in the way that we wanted it to. It didn't position the character the way he needed to be positioned. Had 'Superman' worked in 2006, we would have had a movie for Christmas of this year or 2009. But now the plan is just to reintroduce Superman without regard to a Batman and Superman movie at all.

Now this could just be a little Dark Knight envy. But I'm not following the thinking here. Superman Returns was a bit of a disappointment. One of the reasons is there was too much screen time devoted to the origin of Superman that almost every filmgoer knows. There was too much soap-opery nonsense with Lois and her son and not enough Superman. It's a very flawed script. The damn thing cost about $270 million bucks. Redoing that is quite a commitment.

We know the story of Superman. By heart. We don't need it again. Just make an entertaining movie.

It was the worst Superman movie ever. They had all the CG technologies in hands and still the first movie with Reeve still is the best one.

After I watched it I was really wanting to ask for a refund of the ticket money. I slept during that movie.

They could also, since they want to reboot it, change the cast. Totally. Althoug I like his works, Kevin Spacey wasn't even 5% Gene Hackman's Lex Luthor. Even that guy Roosenbaum plays a better Lex Luthor.

One problem with trying to make a "Dark Knight"-like Superman, is that Batman is inherently a human character. Dark Knight demonstrated that.

Superman isn't human, but Clark Kent is, or at least tries to be. That's why Lois and Clark worked for so long, because it was first and foremost about Clark. I haven't watched Smallville, but its a similar phenomenon I'm sure.

They need to capitalize on that inherent conflict to make this a good story. If they do that, they can change the origin story around enough to make it fresh and interesting (as we saw in Batman Begins).

The Superman franchise should have just died with Chris Reeves. That way we will always remember how great Superman was and not the half-baked efforts since.
But since Warners is behind this, I guess all of us would just have to sit thru more crap.

I think the reason that Superman Returns didn't work is that the most exciting scene of the movie was in the middle with the plane's crash landing. After that climax, it is difficult to get excited about a battle of wits with Lex Luthor.

The problem with Supes Return was it wasn't a new take on Superman, in that Lex Luthor was dumbed down as a villain to be nothing more than a real estate bag man. Since Superman is essentially invincible (besides kryptonite) it kinda makes him a boring character and filmmakers never give us a reason to care about him (a villain worthy of matching wits with Supes).

Give us Brainiac or Darkseid or something other than Lex Luthor for a change and make the damn movie epic. We definitely don't need another Superman origin story. What worried me about that article is how WB wants to make every DC Comics property dark and moody like The Dark Knight. How f-in' original Warner Brothers, really shows an astute understanding of the DC Universe... sigh. I give up.

Darkening Superman is just plain stupid. Batman is the dark one. Superman's struggles are more about the light: how does someone with godlike powers feign humanity without getting dragged into self-interest?

Also, a little Americana wouldn't hurt, either. Truth, justice, the American Way. Superman might be jingoistic, but, daggone it, it is stellar jingo, by gum. A pure hero shouldn't ever be boring, and no movie should ever make me pine for Superman IV: The Quest for Peas, but "Returns" sho 'nuff did.

Ashcan the soap opera, let Supes kickass, and then maybe, just maybe, the classic fistfight with Batman (a la Dark Knight Returns) will be somewhere down the road.

Which, my friends, is all that matters.
