Quick note from The Sports Desk...
Number Four has received countless passes over the years.
We let his classless touchdown celebrations go. Even when he ran around like a little kid while the Packers were up by thirty. Nobody really called him out when he publicly said he did not care about mentoring Aaron Rogers. Brett maintained his fan support during the inane hostage-holding of the Pack the last three years while he mulled hanging up his cleats.
He skated by because his aw-shucks-good-old-boy-gunslinger act was fun to watch.
Favre is a first ballot Hall of Famer. His legacy is set. Even with his recent selfishness. But now that legacy is in jeopardy of taking a major hit.
After a tearful goodbye and retirement - one where he blubbered as he stated he was still a great quarterback - Favre has reportedly asked Green Bay for an unconditional release so he can come back and play again. For someone else. Give me a break.
Enough is enough, Brett. Please go away.

Kind of on the fence on this one (figuratively speaking).
Not that I want him for the Bronco's (go Cutler!) but GreenBay did very well with him last year.
What was his beef again, he didn't have the stamina for the day after the game? He's going to have to explain that then if he does come back. ('That was all bullshit. I can't believe you listened.')
Also, it wasn't like a regular guy quitting his job, he was damn near canonized. The announcers are probably tired of kissing up so much. Course they have lots of practice.....
OTOHOH, Jordan did it...
Exactly. Jordan's last comeback was embarrassing.
Brett said he wasn't 100% committed to football anymore.
Your boy Elway knew when to hang it up, E.
I've had enough.
I don't understand what the hell he is doing. Can anyone think of anything that he has left to accomplish? Does he want another ring? If so, what team actually capable winning of the Super Bowl needs an aged quarterback that isn't willing to mentor, or worse, be an experienced backup?
This can't be just about his 'competitive spirit'.
I'm with you Tim. I've had enough.
Thanks for reading.

I totally agree.
Favre's one of the greats, no doubt. He's a gunslinger of the highest order.
But he's been hedging his bets for the last three years now, and I'm frickin' tired of it.
If you're gonna go, go.
If you're not, don't.
It's your business, but shut the hell up until you're doing one of the other and don't tell us one but then try to go back on your word.
And I want ESPN (and others) to totally ignore him until he has something to say. Don't want to hear what his mom and brothers and dogs are thinking he might want to do.
Don't care at all anymore...
at all...
I recall Keith Hernandez on Fresh Air some time ago. Terry Gross asked him why he stuck around even after he kind of knew he wasn't up for the game. Don't completely remember what he said, but part of it was, 'To be honest, I was making 3 million dollars a year.' Can't argue with that, though, hopefully Bret doesn't really need the money.
It`s time to say good bye Brett before you are to get the fuck out!
I have to disagree with you on this one JW. If you're Green Bay, does Favre or (the largely unproven) Rodgers give you the best chance to win the superbowl next season? Without a doubt the answer is Favre. Yeah, I know they need to get Rodgers up to speed and all that, but if the ultimate goal is to win the big one then you have to welcome Fickle Favre back into the mix.
As far as being tired of the circus...the blame for that falls squarely on the shoulders of the media. Do you see Favre in front of cameras or hear his voice on the radio? Its the talking heads, faux experts, and anal-ists that are beating the dead horse simply because its the middle of baseball season and they have nothing better to talk about.
Last season was one of the best of his career and GB is going to snub their nose at him. That is a huge mistake.
That may be the problem, Curley, my friend. Favre most likely isn't coming back the Packers. (He would give you a better chance to win than Rogers. That is true.) He's asking to be released so he can play for the Redskins or Argonauts something.
As always, thanks for writing.
JW
Now I'm hearing GB doesn't want to release him and doesn't plan to start him. And it's being said Bret felt pushed out by the organization. Kind of a mess.
But see, he probably wouldn't ask for the release if GB welcomed him back on some level. It seems to me that GB's front office is fucking this all up. I could see having Rodgers and Favre compete for the starting job, but coming out and saying you're going to sit him no matter what is crazy talk.
I think you're probably right on that point Curley.
This may be some retribution for jacking the organization around the last couple years. Telling Favre that he can come back as a backup as code for "thanks but no thanks."
Thanks for reading, lads.
Oh, this is the story that E is talking about:
http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/news/story?id=3484473
I'd like to see it when GB has a Monday night game and Bret is holding some clipboard and Rogers is going through some struggles.
From what I can tell, the only reason they don't release him is cause they don't want to play against him in the NFC North. Actually, if they don't release him they can then trade him, I think, and make some $.
Interestingly some sports writers have been saying they didn't believe he was really retired from damn near day one. Maybe they know him better than he knows himself. He's like Hamlet, a divided soul.
If they have him on the team at all, from what I understand, they are going to be paying him like 12 large. To sit on the bench? They can trade him and get money, but how would that sit with his fans up there?
I bet the assistant producers for ESPN are totally rooting for a comeback.
This entire sordid affair was mysteriously foretold years ago in a little-known movie called Something About Mary.
Favre to the 49ers. It is inevitable. The Oracle of Diaz has spoken.
Also, in other Diazian prognostication - The Five Points neighborhood in New York will soon have indoor plumbing and Diaz herself will soon die by poison at the hands of Ron Perleman.
Coincidently, I'm reading this the day he's being followed stalker style by Fox 5 news.
