Did something change around here?

"That's strange, all of a sudden I don't quite feel like myself.

Oh I feel alright... and yet I.. I uh...

EEEEEEEK!!!!!!!!"

(And for anyone that missed the reference, go watch the single best animation Chuck Jones ever did).

So, if you're a regular, you may have noticed we've spruced the site up a bit. Hopefully the changes we made make your YBNBY experience better, although we know that change is hard for some, and we're here to show all the little extras you can now enjoy.

(And if you're reading this via an RSS reader, you might want to click for info about our new feeds)

Cleaner Look and Feel

We hadn't changed the design since we launched 3 years ago, and we were beginning to look a little "2006". The new design is optimized to make the homepage as user-friendly as possible, with lots of stories, yet still easy on the eye. So now we just look "2007"

Recommend-Engineā„¢

Catchy, huh? You'll start to see recommended links on the bottom of some of our posts. Our system will scan the archives from the last few weeks and add some links that you might also like. Because it knows who you are and who you're sleeping with. It's highly sophisticated and no doubt Google is shaking in their boots.

Social Media Links

We've replaced the old breadcrumb trail of links at the bottom of every post with a new "Share This" button. You can use it to save any story to a particular social media bookmarking service, or send to a friend using email, AIM or SMS. You can find links to our Facebook, MySpace and Twitter profiles at the top, and the site is now published under a Creative Commons license.

Breakfast Links

Many of you love Jellio's Breakfast Links, but by mid morning they can be buried way down the page. So we're going to be adding similar stories throughout the week to the sidebar, all powered by the goodness of Del.Icio.Us. And there's a dedicated RSS feed as well.

New RSS Feeds

Speaking of which... we got to thinking - we get up to 15,000 visits a day, and then another 2.7k RSS readers - that's almost a 6th of you. So we've spruced up our RSS offering - now you can subscribe also to all comments on the site too.

Pagination

We got pagination to work right. At the bottom of the home page, you can now page through to the next 15 stories, and on, and on, and on...until the end of time. It may not seem like a big deal to you, but it made us cry when we finally got it to work right.

Comments

Your comments have always been the thing that kept us going on the quiet days, and we've tried to make it easier. Although you will still be moderated on your first post (we get thousands of spam comments every week), if you take the time to register for the site, you'll then be able to comment at will. Our new design also highlight contributions from the writer of any post. Because we're special.

Most Popular

Ooh a little Ajax Widget. Now you can page through those articles that have gotten the most traffic over the months.

Ratings

This was a last minute addition, and it's not fully functional yet. In fact, you may be asking "why bother?" You might be right, let's see how it goes. In a perfect world, we'd start to be able to feature "highest rated stories of the day/week/month" in the sidebar, like YouTube. But that depends on us actually getting some votes.

Ads

Yes - there are a couple more of them now. We've tried to strike a balance between giving you the content you love, and paying for our ever growing beer tab server costs.

And that's about it. Like it? Hate it? We'd love to hear your thoughts, so let us know. And keep reading - this is just phase one, there's a lot more in the pipeline.

Some people are reporting popups from the site. That definitely shouldn't be happening. If something like that happens to you, please let us know.

Didn't get one when clicked to comment. Is it a mac/pc thing?

said Baierman on April 5, 2008 6:31 PM.

It could be coming from the new adserver (and if so, I'm going to be kicking some asses) but until I know what's causing it, I can't stop it.

If it happens to anyone email me at webmaster (at) yesbutnobutyes dot com.

I'm really looking forward to your comments on the first episode of the last season of BSG.

Love the new look and Yeah!!!!! the comment feature is working for me now. Scaramouch you're the best. Thanks for tweaking things for the IE users. I visit here several times a day. Love the uniqueness of the posts, love the polls, and everything else. You all do a great job of keeping us entertained.

Did you retire Connie? Or did the Vaseline people reclaim her as their mascot?
