For the past 2 weeks on Idol, we've enjoyed the performances of the men, and tolerated the performances of the women. Will we see this trend happen for a third week? Haterade and the Cuckoo Clock let you know if this is the case - and who they think will be gone like the '80's.
It's time for the ladies to sing about the 80's. It's also time for them to bare their souls and talk about their most embarrassing moments. Gordon Pepper here, along with Jason Block as we look at what the women did - and who won't be doing anything else anymore on Idol come Thursday night.
We start with Asia'h Epperson
, who's embarrassing moment is that she wiped out on her roller skates. Let's hope she doesn't wipe out on 'I Wanna Dance With Somebody' by Whitney Houston
The Good - It was a good choice of song in terms of it being a radical departure from the big long drawn out songs, and it's a nice change of pace from last week's flu-fest.
The Bad - It's not a good choice of song in terms of musical 'wow' factor. The song doesn't exploit any sort of vocal range, and if you don't power through it, you'll wind up consistantly flat - like she did.
The Jason - Great song choice. She brought a lot of energy and fun to the song....This is a great way to start the show and cement her way in the top 12.
The Verdict - I have been finding myself agreeing with Simon a lot for the past few days, and I'll do so again. This was not her best performance, but she needed something like this to stay young, hip, attract Alexandera's voting audience and get momentum going into the Top 12. I think she accomplished that.
And from safe...to not so safe.
We have 2 singers who desperately need to perform tonight to have any shot at the Top 12. The first of the two endangered singers is Kady Malloy, who thought she was going home (and quite frankly, so did I). In high school, after a rotten audition, Kady made the whole sound system go boom. She hopes to not do that here as she sings 'Who Wants to Live Forever?'
The Good - The song selection is a huge risk, but Kady needed a 'wow' moment. Unlike a safe Whitney Houston song that Asia'h sang, Kady pulled out the stops, which is something the absolutely had to do.
The Bad - If you sing the money note, it must be in pitch and it must match the same tone that the accompanying band is playing. Kady did neither.
The Jason - This is horrible. Her voice is all over the place and she is mauling the big notes. She is out.
The Verdict - Ugh. She needed an amazing performance, and she picked the song to do it, but the pitch didn't match the song and as a result, her big notes clashed against the rest of the band. Not only is Kady's chances of winning the competition not going to live forever, but I believe that less than 24 hours from now, they're going to be snuffed out.
Here's the second person who absolutely needs to produce. So far, we're 0 for 1. Amanda Overmyer
hopes to not burn down a pool, but she hopes to burn down the house with 'I Hate Myself For Loving You' by Joan Jett.
The Good - It's the best song choice she could have possibly made. It's a trip back to the rock roots. And she did rock it out nicely.
The Bad - Very, very, nervous. So nervous, that she screws up the lyrics to the song. And the scarf made me wonder if she's audiitioning to be Dr. Who's next companion.
The Jason - Not only does she suck, she messes the lyrics up. She is the other one done.
The Verdict - From a performance standpoint, she did a very good job. And most peple don't remember the lyrics, so I don't think that will be a factor. I don't know if doing a very good job is going to be enough. It could be, but she is going to need help in the form of someone else not getting the job done.
Carly Smithson
went to a bar and got her legs stuck...and buttered...and toasted brown. Ok, not toasted brown. She sings 'I Drove All Night'...to get your votes.
The Good - Good choice of song. It's another rock song, but it's up tempo and one that you can sink your teeth into. For the second half of the song, she took a nice bite out of the song.
The Bad - For the first half, I thought a tooth was going to fall out. A very shaky start and she had a very weak money note. She had problems with breath control near the end of the song and it showed.
The Jason - Best Female Performance of the season. Perfect Song Choice. Hit the money notes and did everything right. A lock for the top 12.
The Verdict - Best Female Performance of the season, Jason? No way. Not even close. Safe, safe, safe. Blah. It's a very good performance, and it's good enough to get her into the Top 12, but when I think that she got outperformed by Amanda...well....yeah. She's got nothing to worry about this week, though.
Kristy Lee Cook
acted like a dog and had rats on her back while growing up. Uhhh....ok. She sings 'Faithfully' and countrifies it. Will the voters be faithful?
The Good - FINALLY she selects a good song. The countrifying of the song was a good idea. And since it used to be a Journey song, you know Randy Jackson will melt all over that performance.
The Bad - ...but I hated the speed of that song. Way too slow, and while it gives her a chance to show her vocal range, that won't do much when she gets flat during the money note. It gets worse when you can't decipher what she sings in the middle of the song. What starts out sweet leaves a sour taste in my mouth.
The Jason - Liked the country arrangement...mangled the big notes. Big big trouble.
The Verdict - I agree with Jason. It was forgettable and she brutalized the ending. Should Brooke come out there and drill Kristy into the floor, then Amanda may have gotten the break that she needed to stick around.
Ramiele Malubay
needs a better effort after last week's mess. She sings 'Against All Odds' in an attempt to do so. The odds are she's not going to give us another bad effort, right>
The Good - She picks a very good song. She also nails the money note at the end. and the stage presence was very good. It was a huge improvement from last week, but then again, Jason Alexander rapping 'Ice Ice Baby' would have been better than last week.
The Bad - It seems like she struggled with the words and maybe nerves could have gotten her. Like Carly, she also has breath control issues. She needs to think less and sing more.
The Jason - To steal a page from SImon....this was very Karaoke and very theatrical. She is in trouble as well. And what is Paula on?
The Verdict - Maybe she went to the Bo Bice emporium like Jason Castro did last night. Regardless, it's a much better performance by Ramiele, but the fact that she didn't blow the song away should give her good reason to be concerned. And having Danny Noriega in your corner isn't going to help.
Brooke White
is next, and she can knock out Kady with a great performance of 'Love is a Battlefield'. A rotten effort, and she can knock herself out.
The Good - Great choice of song. I really like the arrangement. The hair do also brings her back into the present. Very nice vocal.
The Bad - The third time that I have to say this - watch the breath control. Also watch the pronunciation of the words. The song is not called 'Love EZ E Battlefield'. It almost felt like you were caught in the moment of what you were doing and had to snap out of it twice to recover.
The Jason - This was a risk that worked BIG TIME. I loved the acoustic version of this song. This could be a hit right now. A lock for the top 12.
The Verdict - Wow. This could be the song where little Brooke grew up. It's a great performance that not only puts her into the Top 12, but almost assuredly knocks out Kady and possibly Kristy as well.
We end the show with Syesha Mercado
, who got caught in school passing notes a crush. She sings 'Saving All My Love For You' by Whitney Houston. When in doubt, sing Whitney.
The Good - Another excellent choice of song for a variety of reasons. It's a chancge of pace - a nice slow tune that everyone knows. It's also a song that she can sing through and carry. And everyone loves a Whitney Houston money note.
The Bad - Watch that pitch when you try to get to the money notes. Sometimes you came up sharp. It was not as emotionally charged up as it probably should have been, and it came up a little flat as a panacake-ish.
The Jason - This was the worst performance by her. Too big of a song for her. But that being said, she is in the top 12 without a doubt.
The Verdict - Not her best performance, but it was solid. At this stage of the game, solid will be more than good enough to get her into the Top 12.
Final Verdict - The girls were 'good'. The guys were better - for the third straight week. Some of those girls better be happy that they will make the Top 12, because they won't be enjoying it for very long. Still, you had some good performances, but let's focus on the uh ohs...
Trouble - Kristy Lee Cook, Ramiele Malubay, Kady Malloy, Amanda Overmyer
Kady, who's been 0-3 on performances, is as good as toast. Ramiele still has the Jasmine crowd behind her, and I think she'll be safe. So who bites it? The country singer who shouldn't be in this position? Or the rocker who shouldn't be in this position. I'll go with the country singer who was forgettable while the rocker delivered when she absolutely needed to.
OUT: Kristy Lee Cook, Kady Malloy
(The Jason's Selection: Trouble - Kristy Lee Cook, Ramiele Malubay, Kady Malloy, Amanda Overmyer. OUT: Kristy Lee Cook, Kady Malloy)
