Darwyn Cooke

CookeAction Comics101.jpg

In response to Rich's earlier comics column (which I always enjoy immensely) in which he's desperately seeking Darwyn Cooke art to share, I thought I'd offer up something of my own that coincidentally arrived in my mail this morning. It's a piece of original art by Cooke that recreates a famous Action Comics cover , which appeared (I think) on in the inside of one of the New Frontier books. Enjoy.

Bumblebee vs Optimus Prime

I'm not always a fan of home-made stop motion - all those Lego animations often leave me cold. But you have to admire the execution of this piece - smooth, almost flawless.

St. Patrick's Day Party Time

patty's day.jpg

St. Patty's Day, or Global Drunkenness Day, is around the corner. Here’s some of what’s happening around the world to celebrate.

Boston: Boston takes this day seriously. There’s not just one parade there’s a bunch, beginning this weekend and going all the way till March 30th. But the major gathering takes place in Southie. And if it’s a pub you’re looking for, take your pick. Course you could always take the party bus around.

Dublin: The official St. Patrick’s Day festival for Ireland’s national holiday begins March 13 and ends with a parade on the 17th. Over five days and nights, 4000 performers and 1 million people will be celebrating. The Guinness Brewery, of course, is pitching in.

New York: The world’s oldest St. Patrick’s Day parade kicks off at 8:30am at 44th and Fifth Ave. Drinking starts a few hours earlier. Then it’s time to get blind drunk with the St. Patty’s Day pub crawl.

There's more after the jump.

To the Guy I Caught Masturbating

If I had any kind of musical talent, I’d now be wishing I had thought of this (but I don’t). Details took a Craigslist ad and made it into a song, To the Guy I Caught Masturbating. Actually, two of them so far; you can also see Brush My Hair. They are taking suggestions for more, if you know of a bizarre Craigslist ad that would make a great song. Methinks there is an ocean of material available.

Is there a wrong way to write a Jameson ad?

Photo_030408_001.jpg

This has been annoying me since last night on the subway, where I snapped it. Either I'm an idiot, or somewhere there's a stoopid copywriter.

Anyone who swipes a credit card, or a Metrocard, knows there's a magnetic strip on the back, usually at the bottom. And orienting it correctly before you swipe is the key to getting it accepted.

So - assuming that you are a moron and even try and swipe a card's short edge.... there's two short edges with two sides, so that's four ways. Holding the card upside down is another two ways. Holding it right way up but reversed is seven..... so what the hell are the other two ways that are the wrong way to swipe?

Maybe swiping a card while thinking too much about crappy subway ads can count as a wrong way.

W’s Library

The Chronicle of Higher Education asked readers to design a presidential library (or maybe “libary”) for George W. Bush. You can see larger stills of some designs at the website. The sketches have wonderful names like Bunker, Temple, Open Book, Hole in the Ground, Suspended Belief, Fun Ranch, Non-Library, and Disconnection.

Haterade's Idol Anal-ysis (Round of 16 Men) - 3/4/08

It's the 80's. Big Hair, big songs, and big disappointment for 2 guys, as they won't be able to perform on the big Top 12 Idol stage. Gordon and Jason will let you know who they think those two are.
