The Hater and the Cuckoo are back. Last night, they decimated the first half of the guys, while giving the second half a passiing grade. What will they do to the girls?
I, Gordon Pepper, am back to see 10 lovely women sing beautiful songs. Hopefully, they will do better in the first half than the guys did. Yuck. Joining me is Jason 'The Cuckoo Clock' Block, who has this to say - 'Looking forward to see the girls do better than the guys tonight.'
The idea is song selection - or hope that no one selects your song and you get stuck singing something you don't know anything about (see Haley, Garrett). If you get what you want, then show them what you got...or you'll get what you got.
Carly Smithson
goes first - and we find out that she works at an Irish bar. Carly? Irish? You think? She hopes to redeem herself after last week's flu-filled muddle with “Crazy On You” by Heart.
The Good - She does a credible job with the second part of the song. And she can sing 'Crazy On You' very well for the 4,000 times she has to sing that phrase.
The Bad - So she replaces a song last week that no one knew with a song this week that no one knew. Not only do I not like the choice of song, but I also couldn't understand the first part of it, because she mumbled the words. And that pitch meld near the end of the song was ugly.
The Jason - The problem with this is that she wasn't looking at the camera....her vocals were ok. She will be safe, but like Michael Johns this was a big step down.
The Verdict - This is Michael Johns all over again. She picked a song she liked, and not a song that was either selected soundly or executed that well, which makes me wonder how she thinks she's going to get an audience that will vote for her. She can't blame the flu on this one. And as much as Simon thinks she is the girl to beat, she won't be around if she can't find the song to connect with the voters.
Syesha Mercado,
in my mind, is the girl to beat. But can she follow up last week's powerful performance with another hot song? We see her acting career in commercials, and she cries like a baby. Hopefully her rendition of 'Me and Mr' Jones' won't leave me crying.
The Good - Last week, she showed us she could rock. This week, we see that she can do soul. And she had some really nice making love to the camera moments. And the outfit really matched the song.
The Bad - Watch that pitch, which wanes off when it's not a power note. And like Carly, she sings a song that no one has heard of. What's up with singers selecting obscure songs? Kids - the show isn't about you selecting songs you want to sing. it's about selecting songs that we want to hear.
The Jason - Great great song selection, and told a great story...Fantastic all around.
The Verdict - The judges didn't like it as much as Jason and I did. It's a nice song. However, I can see her fall to 3rd in R & B land if Alexandrea and Asia'h outsing her. I still think she's safe, but like Carly and Michael, she has to stop being self-indulgent and start singing songs that people can relate to.
Brooke White
went to beauty school and works with hair. The song 'You're So Vain' by Carly Simon fits right with that theme. She can't afford to be too vain, because I think she needs to deliver tonight.
The Good - We get our first guitarist from the women's side. The guitar sounds really good, as she stares at Simon while performing, as to direct the 'You're So Vain' lyrics to him. Simon enjoyed it, so it was a nice touch.
The Bad - I'll say the same thing to her like I said about Jason - the guitar may have masked the vocals, which were not too good. She also mangled the lyrics in the middle of the song, which is not good.
The Jason - The big problem with this song is she is performing it HAPPY. This is supposed to be angry. Bad execution.
The Verdict - Best song choice so far. Worst vocal so far. The guitar may have bailed her out, but I still think she needs some people to falter for her to stick around.
Ramiele Malubay
is also a Polynesian dancer. She lost 2 of the 3 people that she hung out with last week (Garrett Haley and Amy Davis) and maybe her choice of song - 'Don't Leave me This Way' - was in tribute of that fact.
The Good - Uhhh....she looks pretty? I like the hair? She can walk really good around the stage?
The Bad - The fact that she selected a song that the general populace has heard of does not cover her terrible performance of it. The pitch was consistently flat and I expected Thelma Houston to come out of the audience with her purse and beat Ramiele senseless with it.
The Jason - Uh oh...we may have out first casualty of the evening. There is no passion in this song. It feels flat. She is in big trouble here.
The Verdict - I'll say it so that Simon won't have to - this sounded like something that you would find in a Karaoke Bar with both the singer and the patrons half-drunk. Maybe she sang it because she's used to the song, but the singing was dreadful. She may not have to feel too badly about her booted friends, because come results night, she may be joining them. We're going to find out tonight just how powerful her voting faction is, because she won't get any new fans with that performance.
Kristy Lee Cook
likes horses and being a tom boy. She sings 'You're No Good', and if she hears that critique tonight, then that's the last time we'll be hearing from her.
The Good - It's a much better performance than last week. Then again, roasting weasels and listening to them scream would have sounded better than her performance last week. No nerves, no flu...
The Bad - ...and no semblance of pitch. Flat, flat, flat with no breakout moments. Add bland with not many money notes and that last performance could be problematic.
The Jason - And she's no good. Where's the passion...this isn't HAPPY time. She is supposed to be upset! She is in trouble as well!
The Verdict - It was 'ok' - but 'ok' isn't going to cut it when we've seen 'great' last week and the heavy hitters waiting to get up to bat this week. There better be a lot of Kristy Lee Cook fans out there - or people with voodoo dolls looking to stick pins in Amanda Overmyer or Kady Malloy.
Speaking of which, Amanda Overmyer
is up. Last week, she was on the border of being eliminated, so the bookworm this week is looking to 'Carry On, My Wayward Son'. Ok, that was bad. Hopefully, she'll sing better than that pun.
The Good - It's a better song selection just on the merit that people have actually heard the song. And the backup singers had some great melody lines. And for the third straight time, I'm avoiding saying good stuff about the actual performance, which means that...
The Bad - ...My eardrums carried on to the bathroom, where they then started puking into the sink. She was invoking the spirit of Nikki McKibbin, and Nikki had much more charisma. She also took Jason Yeager dancing lessons, as her dancing, combined with the 'Bride of Frankenstein' hair, looked like she was being electrocuted live on stage. Speaking of the hair, that looked like a combination between Cruella DeVille and Elvira, Mistress of the Dark.
The Jason - Another HORRIBLE choice of song....and her voice is all over the place. This is one of my two definite outs. And what is up with that dancing?
The Verdict - When Paula's only compliment was her jerky seizure-induced dancing, then you know we have problems. Amanda picked the wrong two weeks to give her two worst performances. Score one for the Kristy Lee Cook fans with the voo doo dolls.
We would really like Alaina Whitaker
to help end the drought of bad singing. We hear that she does not like to see her food touch each other. Uh...ok. We get “Hopelessly Devoted To You” by Olivia Newton-John.
The Good - A good song selection. It's one of her favorites. It's one of my favorites. She sort of hit the notes, which was better than the last 3 singers, so that has to count for something.
The Bad - You can't just sing through the song and then try to redeem yourself with the money section - which she was sharp on and not on pitch. And in the first section, she was just hitting the notes and not 'singing', per se. She was getting ready to belt out the song at the end - and completely oversang it, leaving the notes sharp and a bitter taste in my mouth as my eardrums run back to the bathroom to do some more puking.
The Jason - Here's the problem with this performance....she is all over the place...and she screwed up the money notes....she is in trouble big time.
The Verdict - We continue the bad revival reality show flashbacks with 'Grease: You're the One that I Want'. Sadly, the performance on the song on Grease was better than this.
Alexandrea Lushington
sings “If You Leave Me Now” by Chicago. I'd like to leave this recap now, but unfortunately, we still have some singers to get through.
The Good - It's an interesting rendition of a Chicago song. It was competently sung, and tonight, competently sung is better than 60% of the performances.
The Bad - She herself didn't like the performance. That should say a lot. She didn't challenge herself, she was pitchy all over the place and it was boring.
The Jason - One of my all time favorite songs by Chicago...and she did a very good job with it.
The Verdict - She would be in trouble if #1, she sang this last week and #2. we didn't get the train wreck that we have seen at this point. She will survive, but she has to do better than safe.
Kady Malloy
can also do rigoletto and opera. She will be singing 'Magic Man' by Heart, and she will have a magical chance to siphon a lot of votes from people who haven't been too magical with their performances this week.
The Good - It was ok. She did salvage the second half of the song to make it ok. She sounded good in the money section.
The Bad - But by the time she got to the money section, she only had $1.98 in her account. She's pitchy all over the place in an absolute brutal first half of the song. I used to know what that song was, but not the way she sang it.
The Jason - Oh boy...I think Kady made herself disappear. The vocals are wispy, and all over the place. This is horrifically bad.
The Verdict - So much for her trying to make up for lost votes. Instead, she magically went from dark horse to out the door.
We mercifully end the night with Asia'h Epperson
, who used to be a cheerleader. She sings All By Myself by Eric Carmen - which is pretty much where I want to be after hearing the show this evening.
The Good - I liked her earrings. Very unique silver glittery earrings. Shiny, too. Very shiny, shiny earrings.
The Bad - She butchers the money notes. She recovers, but the applause may have been more sympathy than anything. Ugly start. Ugly ending. Plain old ugly. And yes, we're going to blame it on the flu. Bah.
The Jason - Whoops. She just sang herself out of the competition. I don't care if she was sick. This was bad.
The Verdict - Very ambitious selection, but there's no way she should have sung that song when she was sick. How bad was tonight? She butchers the end of the song, and yet I can't even put her in the bottom 4.
Final Verdict - To be blunt, I liked the female singers better when they had the flu. There was no excellent performers and you had only a handful of good ones. The women better be relieved that you can only get rid of 2 of them this week. For the second straight week, the men drilled the women into the ground and I wonder if we could see an all-male final four. We probably won't, but the women need to step it up.
As for who is leaving? You have 6 worthy nominees who could go. However, I can only select 4. Those 4 are...
Trouble: Ramiele Malubay, Kady Malloy, Amanda Overmyer, Alaina Whitaker
Usually when everyone sings bad, we go back to previous body of work and how active their voting base is. Kady hasn't had any sort of body of work, so she's gone. Ramiele will get all of the people who voted for Jasmine Trias to bail her out. So who stays? The person with one great performance and one lousy one? Or the one with 2 mediocre performances but a lot of air time? I'll say the person who just got a huge infusium of help thanks to Vote For The Worst.
Out: Kady Malloy, Alaina Whitaker
(The Jason - Trouble: Kristi Lee Cook, Asia'h Epperton, Kady Malloy, Amanda Overmyer. Out: Amanda Overmyer, Asia'h Epperton)
We'll see what the verdict is in 24 hours.

while i was reading the first part, i was thinking..what are you talking about? heart? i love them! billy paul? he's great! these artists aren't obscure!
then i remembered that i don't vote, i just watch. i guess all those tweens are doing the voting. and to them, i suppose heart would be obscure...tsk tsk.
my vote for the outs this week are kady and amanda.
I was thinking the same thing.."A song noone has heard of??"..Its amazing to me (and makes me feel old as hell) that the contestants have probably never heard most of these songs.
I disagree with your assessment of Asia'h (that 'H is a constant source of amusement to Scaramouch and me!). I thought she did a good job on her song, especially at the end. She wasn't great when singing in her lower register. Funny how we can all hear different things from the same performer.
