Where are they now? The Road Warrior

poster.jpg

Sure The Road Warrior, aka Mad Max 2, launched Mel Gibson's career. But you know where he is now. (In rehab. Or church. Or writing The Passion Part II.) So today "The man they call Max" is not our focus.

The Road Warrior, a post-apocalyptic, gladiator movie / masterpiece, had more than it's fair share of memorable characters. And so we pay tribute to a few of the actors who helped make it a cinematic classic.

characters.jpg

Lets start at the top, with Mel/Max's RW sidekick....

Bruce Spence - The Gyro Captain

spence.jpg

Spence is probably the most recognizable actor of Road Warrior fame. He's been in The Matrix III, Ace Ventura, a voice in Finding Nemo, Lord of the Rings, Star Wars III and done loads of other movies and television shows.

Here's Bruce in an old 1970's Braemer commercial.

Bruce is currently in production on the Baz Luhrmann, WWII flick Australia. Naturally it stars Nicole Kidman, but we'll see it for Spence who, from this press shot, seems to playing an older guy. Perhaps Nicole's gyrocopper pilot dad.

Vernon Wells - Wez

Who could forgot this character? The gay, badass maniac with a mohawk. Since Road Warrior, Vernon has had parts in Weird Science and a big role as the double crossing Bennett in Schwarzenegger's Commando. He's done lots of other TV work, mostly in Australia. He's currently working on Tru Loved.

Virginia Hey - Warrior Woman

Virginia played the badass beauty and wore football shoulder pads to prove it. She's had a good deal of success after Road Warrior, starring in the James Bond flick The Living Daylights for one. Farscape fans may remember her more recently as Pa'u Zotoh Zhaan. Today along with acting, Virginia launched a Reiki infused line of products with a company called White Flower Lei.

Michael Preston - Pappagallo

Michael/Mike had a successful early 80's TV run, appearing in The Facts of Life, The A-Team, the Scarecrow and Mrs. King, Airwolf, Remington Steele and even Max Headroom. You might say he was the "hey it's that guy..." from 1980's TV. Interesting fact: He had 3 top 30 songs on the UK singles chart before he moved Down Under and starred in Road Warrior. Not much is listed on Mike recently so we assume he's retired or still looking for a way out of the wasteland. But here's a picture of a young, pre-RW Michael filming the Australian TV series Rush.

Kjell Nilsson - Lord Humungus

humungus2.jpg

Kjell was a Swedish bodybuilder turned actor. A precursor to Arnold. There wasn't much on his post-Road Warrior life. According to his Wikipedia entry "he met the actress Kate Ferguson, and they got married in Sweden. She persuaded him to return to Australia and to look for work in the Australian film industry." Otherwise Kjell has fallen off the map. That is until he returns to unleash his dogs of war.

Max Phipps - The Toadie

phipps.jpg

Max's character was the gangs jester/accountant. His fingertips had a scene stealing moment flying in the air after being cut off a steel boomerang. Max did a lot of theater in his post Road Warrior career but sadly died in August 2000. (The second picture above is from his obituary.)

Emil Minty - Feral Kid

emil.jpg

Emil did a few child acting gigs in the 80's but gave up the limelight for a career as a jeweler. Far as we can tell that's his current occupation today. I couldn't find what his store in Sydney is called. Anyone know? Surely it's the one with a glistening steel boomerang in the window.

William Zappa - Zetta/Mechanic

William is a working actor who had lots of bit parts in TV & films. Most notably he starred in the Tom Selleck movie Quigley Down Under. He's currently involved in a WWII era TV series called Curtin, according to IMDB. He also starred in the recent straight-to-tv-then-to-DVD Marvel Comics movie Man-Thing.

Arkie Whiteley - The Gryo Captain's Girl

arkie.jpg

Arkie a few TV & film acting gigs in Australia after Road Warrior. Most notably,a role as junkie Donna Mason in A Country Practice. Tragically she developed an extremely rare adrenal gland cancer and died in 2001 at age 37. Leaving behind an interesting battle over her parents fortune.

Well that's all for now since my light fades, my vision dims...

Thanks to MadMaxMovies for the help.
