5. FOOLKILLER #1
Written by Gregg Hurwitz; art by Lan Medina
Marvel
32 pgs | $3.99
For fans of Garth Ennis' Punisher series comes a new vigilante book published under Marvel's "mature readers" MAX imprint. Foolkiller (silly name, but so's "The Punisher", really) was a character created by writer Steve Gerber in the 1970's and is now the 3rd Gerber character to be revived by Marvel in the past month (see also: Howard the Duck and Omega the Unknown). Foolkiller kills fools. "Fools" meaning sinners and "bad" people, I assume. The concept has best selling crime novelist Gregg Hurwitz at the wheel who made his first splash into comics recently with a well-received Wolverine story.

4. RED MENACE
Written by Danny Bilson, Paul DiMeo and Adam Brody; Art by Jerry Ordway and Al Vey
DC Wildstorm
144 pgs | $17.99
What do Rachel Bilson and Joseph McCarthy have in common? Nothing really but this 1950s era comic about super heroes being labelled as communist sympathizers is written by OC star Adam Brody and former Flash writer Danny Bilson (father of Rachel). The artwork is provided by DC veteran Jerry Ordway who does a real good Senator McCarthy.

3. JELLYFIST
By Jhonen Vasquez & Jenny Goldberg
Slave Labor Graphics
48 pgs | $8.95
I actually don't know too much about this one except that it is by Jhonen Vasquez who is known best, perhaps, for his 1990's book Johnny the Homicidal Maniac. Vasquez collaborates with artist Jenny Goldberg on this one and the actual act of these two collaborating seems to be what the book is actually about. Couldn't find any sample pages but you can read more about the book here. The less I know about it the more intrigued I am, frankly.

2. CRAWL SPACE #1: XXXOMBIES
Written by Rick Remender, Kireon Dwyer and Tony Moore; art by Kieron Dwyer
Image Comics
32 pgs | $2.99
A mashup of 70's porn movies and zombies. Do I need to say anymore? An adult film crew in 1977 are holed up inside for a long film shoot. When they come out...Zombie Apocalypse!! Again, do I really have to say anything else to get you interested in this one?

1. THE SPIRIT VOL. 1
By Darwyn Cooke
DC
192 pgs | $24.99
One of the most widely acclaimed new comics of the year is now collected in lovely hardcover. Darwyn Cooke's revival of Will Eisner's seminal Spirit stumped all the naysayers that didn't think anyone other than the late Eisner could ever (or should ever) handle the character. Cooke of Batman: The Animated Series and DC's New Frontier fame proved to be an able successor. Also included in this collection is the one-shot precursor the the series, Batman/The Spirit which was a fun, first-ever team-up between the two classic characters.
