Everyone on the net is posting this video of Lauren Caitlin Upton, Miss South Carolina, in the Miss Teen USA pageant Friday. So we may as well, too. It’s funny as all get-out, but I have a couple of thoughts about it.
First off, I thought, give the kid a break. It’s an unfair question. If it were me, my answer would be, “I have no idea. You’ve handed me a random fact that I’ve never heard before, and I don’t even know if it’s true. Therefore, I haven’t had time to form an opinion on why the state of geographic knowledge is the US is so poor.” That’s because I’m three times her age and have little tolerance for bullshit.
The other thought is.... this is BRILLIANT! Miss South Carolina did not win the Miss Teen USA pageant, but do you know who did? Of course not. It was Miss Colorado. She’s beautiful, but so is this girl and every other contestant. After all, they are all teenage beauty queens. But who is the internet star today? Who has a million views on YouTube already? Who are you going to remember from this contest? If you recall the Miss Universe pageant a few months ago, you are more likely to remember that Miss USA fell on her butt than to recall who actually won. Way to go, Lauren!
