4. X-MEN: ENDANGERED SPECIES #1
Written by Mike Carey; art by Scott Eaton and John Dell
48 pgs | #3.99

The jumping on point for the next big X-men crossover is here. This one-shot will set the stage for the next year or so of stories in the X-men universe and is written by Mike Carey who has been getting a lot of acclaim for his current run on the X-men comic. With mutants now an endangered species in the Marvel universe and no new mutants being born, every death hits them hard and in this book they lose another one.

3. BATMAN EGO AND OTHER TAILS

Written by Darwyn Cooke and others; art by Darwyn Cooke and others
200pgs | $24.99

This is basically DC's Darwyn Cook showcase, collecting a lot of his Batman-related work from the past few years -- notably his very first comics work, Batman: Ego. Even better though and also featured here is Catwoman: Selina's Big Score, his heist caper that kick started the new look and style for Catwoman a few years back.

2. PHONOGRAM VOL 1: RUE BRITTANIA

written by Kieron Gillen, art by Jamie McKelvie
15pgs $14.99

If music is magic then what kind of magic would British '90's pop create? That's the kind of question that this story attempts to answer. David Kohl is a Phonomancer, a crass, elitist pop-music obsessive who derives magic from the music he loves. David finds himself in a race to prevent a group of fellow Phonomancers from rewriting reality. If you love Elastica and Harry Potter on about the same level then this book was written for you. What has always attracted me to it though are the beautiful covers done for the original limited series by Jamie McKelvie which are all homages to famous Brit pop album covers.

1. SAMMY THE MOUSE #1
By Zak Sally
32 pgs | $7.95

The newest book in Fantagraphics' Ignatz line of oversized, semi-regularly released ongoing comics is Zak Sally's Sammy the Mouse, a trippy "children's story" involving epileptic seizures, hard alcohol and apparent hallucinations. Sally is maybe more well-known as being the bassist for the indie rock band, Low (that only shows you how little known people in the comics field are), but lately he has been getting a lot of recognition for his comics work including Eisner Award nominations for his last book The Recidivist. Fantagraphics is touting the "sophisticated two-color process" used on this book. We'll have to see it in person to know what the hell they mean but they've never let us down with their printing before so it should be pretty outstanding.
