I know exactly how he feels.
I didn't think this was possible, but I may like John from Cincinnati more than I liked Deadwood, and that's saying a whole bunch.
(warning...lots of spoilers)
Is it the way David Milch has once again intrigued me by a world I know hardly anything about? Is it the way he's teaching me yet another dialect of English I wasn't aware existed, this time replacing 40 or 50 cocksuckers per episode with a constant stream of SoCal surfisms. Or is it just that I have no freaking idea what's going to happen next.
If you haven't watched the show (and all three episodes are being shown back to back tonight on HBO), John is a fairly clueless first-time visitor to Imperial Beach, California. At first, I was under the impression he's from another planet. But it's become clear pretty quickly that he's some form of God, or the Son of God, or the Architect, or whatever. And upon realizing this, you have a newfound appreciation for whenever John utters the phrase What do you want, Butchie? Because if Butchie says he wants the world to swallow everyone up whole, it just may happen. (It took me two viewings of the second episode before I realized a small earthquake had occured immediately after Butchie's dealer had punched John in the face)
Here's what's happened so far...one person has come back from being brain dead, and one bird has come back from being dead-dead. One woman was told to see God, and virtually does. One man is afraid of a motel room, and another sees shapes in his backseat. A junkie's head catches fire, a dealer threatens to shoot everyone he sees, oh...and a guy floats.
There's some sort of we're all connected in this big, beautiful world message going on here. Some sort of chaos theory, one thing leads to another, kind of lesson that I'm too slow to figure out. Or, maybe it's just t-minus whatever time for the Rapture, and John's just here to gather up the good ones. He does say The End is Near a whole lot. Whatever it is, I can't wait 'til next Sunday.
While you're deciding whether or not to watch, check out an interview with creator, David Milch, where he tries to explain the show to Craig Ferguson...pretty funny.
