Idol (Anal)ysis - 5/1/07

No one Idol is going to be booted on a benefit show. No one Idol is going to be booted this week, either - we're getting rid of two. See who Haterade thinks you need to worry about - and if the votes even matter this week - inside.

Last week, on American Idol, we get a bit of a curve ball thrown at us - we don't have anyone eliminated. Instead, we will have a double elimination this week, with the 2 lowest vote-getters to be celebrating El Cinco De Mayo at home instead of a musical soundstage.

So what are we looking for this week? Maybe nothing. The picks may have already have been made, depending on what the rules are going to be on voting this week. Last week, due to the promise of a donation per vote, 2 phone lines per contestant and a 4 hour voting window, we have had over 70 million votes. In order to make it equitable for this week's performances, Idol needs to have 2 lines for each singer and a 4 hour window this week as well, but even if they do, the voting fervor this week will certainly not be as much as last week.

It is highly probable that we will be watching the last performance of Lakisha Jones, and because of the format, it is likely that Melinda and Jordin will be representing the women in the Final Four. The voting for the men, on the other hand, could be close. Phil Stacey, who has been the perennial underdog for the whole season, has finally showed up to sing, while Blake Lewis has been fading and Chris Richardson has the kiddie vote. You could make a case for any of the guys to be leaving.

Of course, it all boils down to singing, so we'll see tonight what happens. Unlike the women, tonight's performances could make a world of difference to the guys, which based on them ping-ponging around for the past few weeks, woiuld mean that they are pretty close to each other in the voting. Is it possible that two guys could be sent packing instead of Lakisha? Is it possible that if Jordin or Melinda are lukewarm, that the audiences, convinced that they are safe, don't vote for them, that we could have an upset? Either scenario is possible - and we'll see in 24 hours what scenario could very well occur.
