(American) Idol Thoughts - 5/2/07

Last week, American Idol gave back a second chance to one singer - but tempered it by eliminating 2 of them this week. With Bon Jovi performing and with the theme being rock, we'll soon find out who gives singing a bad name and who may be living on a prayer.

Phil Stacey leads it off with 'Candle in the Wind'. He sure has been twisting in the wind.

The Good - Phil finally gave a full effort on a full song. That was a great selection. And he made Randy Jackson gush.

The Bad - What REALLY would have made him gush? Wanted, Dead Or Alive. A very similar song, but more familiar and destined to get him more votes - votes which he desperately needed.

The Verdict - He sang a great song...that he really needed to do last week when there was more of a push. Great performance, but I don't know if that's going to be enough.

Jordin Sparks is living on a prayer...maybe. Not everyone thought she was great last week and she needs some redemption this week.

The Good - She did a credible job with the song. And I liked the medallion.

The Bad - The problem wasn't the genre. It was the choice of song. It was an awful, awful choice, between the overwhelming range and the underwhelming lack of chances to pop out a golden note.

The Verdict - Jordin better hope that she got a lot of votes last week, because she's not going to score many here.

Lakisha wants to take you to church, as she sings a song that's not a love song. Will it also not be her funeral song?

The Good - MUCH better than last week. And she gets a kiss from Simon. AwwwwBarf.

The Bad - Once again, pitchy at the beginning of the song. Lack of popability on the notes make this song bland. And that awful black dress thing with red in the middle makes her look like a bloody Oreo.

The Verdict - I didn't like it as much as the audience did. I'm not sure if this makes up for what she did last week.

Blake decides to roll the dice and plays with 'You Give Love a Bad Name'.- complete with beat boxing and vocal DJ scratching. It's a great time to take a risk, but if it comes up Snake Eyes, he's probably going to be ejected from the American Idol Casino.

The Good - It sounds neat - sort of like what the song could sound like if remixed by Duran Duran or The Thompson Twins. This was Beat Boxing done the right way.

The Bad - I think Simon was right ehen he said that Blake polarized the audience base. I'm not sure that Blake has that sort of base that he can afford to polarize.

The Verdict - I don't think it was the most original rendition (I still think that Bo Bice's acapella was better), but I do think that this was a rendition done correctly. That should bail him out, because of who's next...

Chris Richardson is next. He sings 'Wanted Dead Or Alive', which I think he could cover very well. Can he pull it off?

The Good - He pulls the vocal intonation off. He made it his own, and he did a nice job, musically.

The Bad - Wanted - Chris Richardson, for mutillating and forgetting the lyrics in the middle of the song.

The Verdict - He did the best that he could with the song, but I would have loved to have seen what Jordin could have done with this and Chris would have done with 'Living on a Prayer'. They should hasve swapped, and they are both in trouble for not doing so.

We end the night with Melinda Doolittle, who brings soul to 'Have a Nice Day'.

The Good - Did I say that she couldn't cover anything else besides R and B? Silly me. She brings some angry attitude which we haven't seen before and it's a nice factor to the song.

The Bad - What's up with the finger wiggling? Was she trying to imitate Jello with those fingers?

The Verdict - Best performance of the night. Takes back the front-runner crown from Jordin.

Overall Verdict - I am shocked that Rock Night was better than Inspirational Anthem night. I am also shocked that these would be my bottom two.

SHOULD be Out: Jordin, Phil

BUT as we all know, this is Idol. Jordin and Phil both had a good first week, and I think that the voting audience with the massive amount of votes coming in, will reward style over substance. Hence....

Out: Lakisha, Chris

Join us in 24 hours to see who will be going out in a blaze of not much glory.

I think Phil actually did "Blaze of Glory"...thought he was really good, too.

Not sure what Jordin was doing, but she was a good sport about the criticism and seemed to know she was not in her comfort zone with that genre.

its going to be tough to see 2 go this week, but misery loves company, right?
