VT Internet Roundup

The internet is having a field day, or week, or month with the Virginia Tech shootings. Here are some links that may get you up to speed.

First, the event itself was relayed round the world in real time, as students and faculty used their cellphones, email, and internet forums to communicate what was happening. Fark had such a thread, with William Dunn (xiaodown) posting from campus.

Vultures swooped down early. Within hours, eBay had listings for Vrginia Tech tribute and memorial domain names up for bids, as well as memorial magnet ribbons and t-shirts. Cafe Press had listings for “Virginia Tech Target Practice” and other black humor slogans. To their credit, both eBay and Cafe Press pulled such listings within 24 hours.

Shooter Seung-hui Cho is certainly getting press, between his plays and the package he sent to NBC.

Pundits weighed in one who’s to blame. Cynical-C is keeping a roundup of the blame game. The list is getting longer every day. There is also a lot of “If 33 deaths in your backyard are shocking, imagine how the Iraqis feel.”

There are quite a few internet outlets who are remembering the victims. CNN has a tribute page, with a short profile on each of the victims. MyDeathSpace.com has links to the victims MySpace pages. Those pages are incredibly sad, with messages of condolences pouring in from those who either know the student, or else came to know them through what they posted.
