Hopefully, you all read the Celebrities April Fool's Special. But what's not an April fool is Tony Bennett, who will be helping the Idols perform this week. So who will listen to him and who will be leaving their singing career in San Fra...I mean the Idol Soundstage?
Blake Lewis starts us off and sings Mack the Knife. Tony warns him about being too cutesy with the song. Blake? Cutesy with a song?
The Good - He wasn't overly cutesy, and he had some nice runs near the end of the song. His tone is perfect for this sort of music.
The Bad - He needed the runs at the end, because the runs at the beginning were ghastly. he had pitch problems all over the place tonight.
The Verdict - The song was a great choice. Unfortunately, the performance, which was not great, completely exposed him for who he is - someone who beatboxes and has a lot of eye candy, but needs to use it to cover his limited vocal range.
Phil Stacey, right off his losing bet to Chris Sligh, is trying to win a different competition - the American Idol one.
The Good - He actually sings the song technically well. If he did this consistantly for the first 4 weeks, he wouldn't be in the position that he is currently in.
The Bad - He took a page out of the Chris Richardson book 'How to Sing with the Emotion of a Brick'.
The Verdict - Simon called the song dark and gloomy, like he was singing for a funeral. Apparently - his own. He seems resigned to be leaving now, and the audience this week will probably give him his wish.
Melinda Doolittle has got rhythm. Who can ask for anything more?
The Good - I can't ask for a better vocal. AND she FINALLY dresses and sings young. Hooray!
The Bad - Would it hurt to do something from...oh....the past 10 years? I know you can't do it this week, because it's old standards, but could you please sing one song from our era? Please?
The Verdict - You knew she was going to sing well, as this is her wheelhouse. I'm waiting for a week where the R and B singers can't get off the hook and actually have to sing something out of their repertiore. Let's see how good you really are...
Chris Richardson should be able to knock something out of the park here. Based on his past few weeks, he may need to.
The Good - This was by far the best Chris Richardson that we have seen. He actually makes some emotional runs in the music. For once, the comparisons to Justin Timberlake are justified.
The Bad - Justin, however, would be throwing stuff at his television set for the first half of the song, where Chris was trying to find any semblance of a pitch.
The Verdict - Based on what we have already heard (and based on what we have left), this will be the best male performance of the evening. Now, can he do two in a row next week and actually give himself a shot to do better than Blake?
Jordin Sparks is Ryan's personal favorite and Tony's personal favorite. Will she be the evening's personal favorite?
The Good - Traditional Jordin. Great voice and performance.
The Bad - The reason why Simon thought you were karaoke is that the song choice and arrangement made it sound like 'So What'? And making faces at Simon when he says something that you don't like does not bode well in the court of publie opinion.
The Verdict - Not her best performance, but solid stuff, and this should easily advance her to the next week without much worry.
Gina Glocksen sang the best performance of her life last week. She will need something like that again this week, because you know Haley's audience is going to be voting for her.
The Good - She does sing well. She has a solid effort...
The Bad - ...but what hurts her is her song selection, and like Jordin, she argues with Simon, which is never going to help you out.
The Verdict - In the words of Simon, good effort, but pales in comparison to the other women this evening. The fact that the woman she absolutely had to beat, Haley Scarnato, drilled her into the floor is going to give her problems this evening.
Sanjaya Malakar has decided to perform...well, it really doesn't matter what he performs now, does it?
The Good - I give him points for trying to be serious. There is a good singer in there somewhere.
The Bad - There isn't enough of a good singer to conquer a song like this. And the hair was flat.
The Verdict - Sanjaya has a decision to make. He can either attempt to win the competition by being as outlandish as possible, or he can try to sing seriously and be booted off in the next 3 weeks. We have seen that he is going to try the latter.
Haley Scarnato, who almost went bye-bye last week, needs to either sing really well, or have someone else sing badly. She already got the second part to happen...
The Good - ...and she provides the first part, Very nice job on a well-known song.
The Bad - You know last week's performance? Can't do that anymore. The next time she does, the's leaving the show.
The Verdict - She will be safe this week because of her performance. She can be safe for the next month if either this week or next week she can knock Gina out of the competition.
Finally, Lakisha Jones takes the stage. You don't think that she would pick an old standard, do you?
The Good - Well, surprise surprise, she does. She sings well, too.
The Bad - You see the comments that I gave Melinda? May as well give them to Lakisha, too. Get younger and do something that doesn't make me go. 'Ooh. R and B. Whoopie.'
The Verdict - She's good, but right now she's third in a bunch of R and B singers. The nest 2 weeks should be smooth sailing, but when we get to 7...
Overall Verdict - We're starting to see the forerunners break out from the pack. Haley and Chris redeem themselves nicely, while Phil and Gina make their cases to be booted off. As for Sanjaya, someone from Idol (or his family, or both) must have confronted him last week and bitch-slapped him. As a result, he's taking the competition seriously, but it also means that he will be leaving soon.
Soon, however, is not tonight.
TROUBLE: Sanjaya Malakar, Phil Stacey, Gina Glocksen
So who leaves? Is it the person who was the worst male of the evening and watched as Chris Richardson sang all over him? Or is it the person who was the worst female of the evening and watched as Haley Scarnato sang all over her? The answer: The person who sang like he was giving up and going home - because he probably is.
OUT: Phil 'I want my $50 back, biotch' Stacey.

Sanjaya is going to make it to the top 4. After that he's gone quickly.
Sanjaya in the top four? That's a bold statement, Pit Pat. Haterade, fantastic roundup. In the weeks since you've been writing these, I have enjoyed the show so much more looking forward to you analysis. First class.
I'm surprised you didn't mention Haley's boobs, which is the only thing I could concentrate on during her performance.
I think you are right about Phil and Gina. I hope Gina goes, but I think it will be Phil.
I have strong doubts about Sanjaya making it past the final 6 though.
I didn't agree with Simon's assessment of Gina. I personally think she sang her best yet and that may be enough. True, Melinda and Lakisha are very strong singers, but that doesn't mean everyone will want them to win AI. I mean, people voted for Fantasia and we haven't heard anything from her in a while. Maybe the voters will want something different this time.
Poor Phil Stacey..I like him. He actually reminded me of a young Frank Sinatra, too. But he didn't bring any emotion to his performance.
Sanjaya should definitely go. He probably isn't a bad singer when he's in a small group, but he doesn't have the chops for the big stage..
For a brief moment when Sanjaya walked out on the stage I thought he was actually going to turn out to be this amazing singer who just hadn't been trying hard up to this point. Ha, what was I thining?
I think he jumped the shark tonight and will be gone within the next couple of weeks.
People love Sanjaya here, don't they?
Seriously, even if Sanjaya were to make the Final 4, it would NOT be the first time someone that bad got that high. We'll have more on the history of that on the (anal)ysis show.
I didn't hate Gina's performance as much as Simon did, but the problem isn't even with Gina's voice as much as it is her genre. The Idol Voting Audience has given the person who carried the R and B genre 4 of the past 5 titles (Carrie Underwood being the lone exception) while the Rock Genre has only gotten Bo Bice to the finals. Anyone else that has represented Rock has left early (Chris Daughtry, Patrick Lake, Constantin Maroulis, etc.)
That's not to say that there aren't people who love rock. The problem is that people who love rock don't vote in these sort of competitions - and see Rock Star's ratings for proof.

American Idol is the polar opposite of rock and roll. Even Simon has said before to some of those contestants that a true rocker wouldn't be caught dead doing American Idol.
Okay, expert time. Haley and her absolutely perfect breasts have one detractor, but most of the arrows of "those other guys" are pointing at Phil.
