This week, we journey to the genre which has been the favorite-killer: country music. Will there be an upset? If so, who? You may be surprised...
This is Haterade back with you for another spin on the American Idol racetrack. The music on this week's carousel is country, and Martina McBride gets to teach the Idolers how to make the music believable. My friend Jason (no, not Jason Plump from Moonachie, NJ) will also be in the recap, as he wants to hear some believable music.
Before we start, my heart goes out to everyone affected by the tragedy on the Virginia Tech campus. You're all in my prayers.
Phil Stacey better be believeable, because he's been in the bottom for the past 4 weeks. He needs an excellent performance to even have a shot to stick around.
The Good - He picked a great song to showcase his vocals on.
The Bad - But he still sang like he is going home. He's not running for mayor, so there is no reason so start hugging people and kissing babies during the performance.
The Jason - It not very believable to see someone singing country that looks like Moby.
The Verdict - He's still in the bottom three, but he's going to once again get bailed out.
Jordin Sparks decides to sing with a Broken Wing. I hope she does not come up with a broken vocal chord.
The Good - Powerhouse Performance. This is the stuff that championship contenders are made of.
The Bad - That dress makes her look like Patsy Cline - in her 50's. Too bad she didn't live to be 50.
The Jason - It's amazing that she can sing like that.
The Verdict - Best performance of the night. This performance now makes her the leader to win the whole thing.
From best in the game - to Sanjaya. He wants to sing 'Let's Give Them Something to Talk About'. With him wearing a bandana, he already has people having something to talk about.
The Good - At least Jon Peter Lewis has company in the choreography department. He swivels great and would win in a Karaoke competition. And he's got a nice bandana.
The Bad - The only way that he would do Bonnie Raitt justice is if she arrested him and brought him in for impersonating a vocalist.
The Jason - I could sing like that if I had my manhood being squeezed in a vice.
The Verdict - The fear of Chris and Phil being eliminated may have finally taken it's toll on Sanjaya.
Lakisha decides to take a page from another American Idol vocalist - this time Carrie Underwood - and sings 'Jesus Take the Wheel'
The Good - Another vocally strong performance by Lakisha. She was the third best performance of the evening.
The Bad - But she's the third best of the R and B women, and she was overpowered by the band. She had uncharacteristic pitch problems and the song choice was awful.
The Jason - Good, but only because the men suck.
The Verdict - I agree with Jason. It wouldn't shock me to see her in the bottom three, but I don't see her leaving because she's going to get bailed out this week.
Chris Richardson was in the bottom three, and the audience almost booed him off the stage. Chris better hope that the audience doesn't boo him while he's performing.
The Good - He's actually doing a better job of emotionally singing and performing.
The Bad - Flat, flat, flat. Missed the high notes, missed the low notes, missed the phraseology. One big miss.
The Jason - Crap.
The Verdict - I'm actually quite shocked that Chris would take this genre and mutilate it. If I am singing for my life, and I turn around and sing that, then I am joining Phil and packing my bags.
Melinda Doolittle decides to sing 'Trouble is a Woman'. This year, trouble is when a man opens his mouth to sing.
The Good - Takes an unknown song and absolutely carves it into making it her own.
The Bad - Sings an unknown song which is probably an old country standard. These performances, though sounding great, will cost her voters as they gravitate towards songs that they know.
The Jason - She can sing! She now needs a neck.
The Verdict - Second best performance of the evening. When Lakisha leaves in the next few weeks, Melinda 'Tina Turner' Doolittle will get her shot at joining Jordin in the finals.
Blake Lewis finishes off the show. Hopefully, he's been reading my column and he will sing well enough so that he himself isn't finished.
The Good - Like Chris and Phil, his performance skills are a lot better. And he picked a good song. Notice I'm not mentioning his singing, but his performance skills.
The Bad - The Sweater doesn't match the song. Neither does the pitch, which was flat all over the place. He was VERY nervous, which didn't help.
The Jason - Crap. And the sweater sucked.
The Verdict - This was NOT a good performance to end the night with. This was just plain, plain, plain, and this week, just ok could be a problem.
Overall Verdict - Well, this was an interesting week. Some people who absolutely needed to step up didn't, and that's going to let some people off the hook this week. We know that Jordin and Melinda right now are untouchable.
SHOULD be in Trouble - Sanjaya, Lakisha, Chris
But this is American Idol, and this week is the week where weird things have traditionally started to happen. Lakisha, as plain as she was, I think will still have enough of a vote to get her out of the bottom three, which means that we're going to have a sausage party down there. I think that Chris was terrible, but since Blake didn't do anything either, and since everyone knew that Chris was in trouble from last week, I'm going to call a bit of a surprise...
TROUBLE - Sanjaya, Blake, Phil
This is pure Chaos Theory here - Blake didn't sing great, plus his constituency, thinking that he is safe, spent more of their vote saving Chris and neglected Blake. Phil is going to be in the bottom three because he just doesn't have the vote. Sanjaya is there because - well, he's Sanjaya. Blake will make it to the happy couch, leaving Phil and Sanjaya. Phil will once again get bailed out, because once again, someone sang worse than he did. And let's face it, when many of the people from Vote For The Worst participate in Dial Idol, and when Dial Idol places Sanjaya last, then you know that the ride is just about over.
OUT - Sanjaya 'Love me, Love my hair' Malakar.
(And yes, The Jason agrees with me)
Tune in 24 hours from now to see if Americas' Musical Nightmare is over yet.

You da man, Haterade!
Good call on Blake. Wow.
Love this feature. Refuse to watch the show, but read this every week because it's funny and smart. Maybe I'll make myself watch next week so I can understand what you have to say about their clothes, which I know must be as hilarious as the matching whitened teeth and over-waxed eyebrows the group usually sports.
This morning a local TV station here interrupted VA Tech news to break the news about Sanjaya. Yeah. I know. There's a saying in Arkansas: Thank God for Alabama.
