When Pigs Fly update

Lory Feeding Pigs

Sunday's screening and discussion of the moving documentary When Pigs Fly was fantastic.

The event was completely sold out. Lory (barefoot in her wheelchair), Charlene, and most of the family were present at the screening, and the discussion session after was very emotional. People were inspired by Lory's life story, and many were angered by some of the Worker's Comp issues raised in the film.

The presence of a CSX lawyer in the audience only served to ratchet up the tension during the discussion.

And it didn't help her cause that she responded to a very emotional, very human issue -- the decision that Lory's depression was not related to the accident that left her a paraplegic and therefore would not be covered by Worker's Comp -- with the usual cold, corporate thinking that often leads to very bad decisions. The CSX representative said this ruling was made by a jury who heard the case, a revelation that quieted the audience until Charlene fired back that Lory didn't have the money to attend the court proceedings, which were held in Baltimore, and therefore WASN'T PRESENT for the ruling. I'm sure it was a very fair proceeding given that bit of information.

Charlene posted a wonderful entry in her blog about her experience at the screening:

Sunday was a very special, uplifting day for all of us, but especially so for Lory. She doesn’t complain, but I know that she frequently feels very alone, as if it’s just her fighting the corporate powers, while trying to live her life. Nothing is easy for her. She had all she could do to come up with gas money to get to Maitland because her disability check, which was due last Monday, still hadn’t arrived.

Sunday afternoon Lory didn’t feel alone.

Fortunately, the festival added another screening this Sunday, April 1st at 11 AM. If you are in the area, be sure to check it out, or visit the movie's official site to look for screenings in your area. Hopefully some network is paying attention and will snap up the rights to air it. Are you listening, We or Discovery or HBO or Showtime?

I just watched the preview for this. What can I say...wow! I am very interested in seeing this film. It gave me chill bumps while I was watching it.
