When Pigs Fly

When Pigs Fly

My friends Eric Breitenbach and Phyllis Redman recently completed an absolute stunner of a documentary called When Pigs Fly. It's an incredibly moving portrait of a quadriplegic woman who lives with and cares for over 700 pigs. Yes, 700 pigs! I could rave about the film, but since I'm a friend I'll just point you to a couple reviews:

Here is a "Freakin' Awesome" review from Film Threat.

Another great review from The Hollywood Reporter.

The website for the film has some beautiful photographs as well as listings of upcoming festival screenings.

This Sunday, March 25, 2007, I am moderating a panel discussion after a screening of the film at the Florida Film Festival, so if you are in or near Orlando, come on by and check it out on the big screen, as it is a beautifully photographed movie.

Check out the trailer:

She's obviously paraplegic, not quadriplegic. I'm only half as stunned now.

I had wondered about that also, but wrote "quadraplegic" for other sites because that's a quote from the website. The time I spent wondering about it caused two authors to post the same story, with the same picture, on Neatorama with two minutes!

She could be quadriplegic by having "limited" use of her arms and hands.

Yeah, but I'm thinking "limited" would be referring to small, twitching movements. Sort of like what Christopher Reeves was able to achieve after years of therapy. She manages to throw pig feed out of a large bucket. If it's "limited," it's not dramatically so.

An intriguing story nonetheless.

Prediction: Sometime in the near future, her wheelchair will overturn. Most likely from a large pig accidentally knocking it over. At that time, the pigs will consume her.
