(American) Idol Thoughts - 3/27/07

If tonight is Gwen Stefani night, then who's singing songs from Donna Summer? What in the blue blazes is Sanjaya doing? (Well, we ask that question every night). How in the world did someone manage to sing worse than him? Why aren't you clicking on the link to find out?

If you're a rocker, there's No Doubt that you'll be enjoying tonight's performances, which features not just the music of Gwen Stefani but the music that inspired her, which includes The Police, The Cure, and...Donna Summer? Wha?

Lakisha is going to be singing Donna Summer's Last Dance. She's hoping this isn't her last song.

The Good - Of course she does a good song. She FINALLY not only goes mainstream, but she also goes younger - two things that she desperately needs to do.

The Bad - This is Gwen Stefani week, and we're picking Donna Summer? This is an obvious cop out if I've ever seen one. It's also been the death song of a number of Idol contestants (most noticeably, Ryan Starr in the first season of Idol). In addition. she avoided singing the part where you can really belt out the high notes. What's up with that?

The Verdict - Its a very good performance, but if you're going to stay in R and B all day, it's going to cost you dearly down the stretch.

Chris Sligh likes to play in his boxer shorts when he's not singing. He's singing 'Every Little Thing She Does Is Magic' by The Police. Well it's closer to Gwen Stefani than Domma Summer.

The Good - Like Lakisha, desperately needed to get a song that is mainstream. He finds it...

The Bad - But the execution is awful. There are a few noticeable spots that he flubs the words and doesn't holds out the notes that he should be. He's off-pace, off-speed and off-kilter.

The Verdict - There's a reason why I thought he'd be in trouble tonight. This is definitely not in his Wheelhouse. If the crowd runs to vote for Sanjaya, Vote For The Worst may be in danger of losing a spokesman.

Gina is a huge Gwen Stefani fan. I expect her to score here. She better for her sake, as she selects 'I'll Stand by you'.

The Good - Perfect song selection, This is Gina at her best. And the boots are nice.

The Bad - The problem is that not every night is going to be Gwen Stefani night. Gina needs to find big voice songs in other genres besides Rock.

The Verdict - She absolutely had to perform tonight, and she delivered. This should help her cause and she may be able to steal some of Haley's fan base should she flounder.

Gwen wishes Sanjaya good luck. Sanjaya wishes himself good luck by wearing a 7 braided fauxhawk. He looks like a rooster in heat.

The Good - I may get yelled at for this, but the performance was not that bad. He actually was on pitch for the second half of the song, and the last note can be comparative as better than some of the head honchos.

The Bad - I was going to say that it was incredibly pitchy at the beginning of the song, where he forgot his lyrics, but the 7 braided mohawk is compelling me to say nothing but good things about his fashion sense. The power of Sanjaya's hair compels thee...

The Verdict - Part of the lyrics explicitly state that 'I'm driving to my own destruction'. The sad thing is that by absolutely not taking this seriously and by resigning himself as the freak show, (and by talking back to SImon), Sanjaya does just that. Randy and Paula both yell at him and tell him that his vocals, especially on that performance, were good enough for the competition and he could be good if he took it seriously. They are absolutely right. Sanjaya's appeal is the fact that he's a nice kid, but by committing the 3 deadly Idol sins (Forgetting the lyrics, bitching to Simon and not taking the competition seriously), he may have crossed that line of no return.

Gwen likes Haley's choice of song. She does not like the fact that Haley is going to improvise the melody.

The Good - I agree with Gwen on the song selection. She does even have a nice interpretation of ths song.

The Bad - Here's the problem with it - She didn't sing the song out loud or give it her all. She held it back and did not belt the song out, which made it sound like a half-hearted muddled effort. A definite step backwards from last week.

The Verdict - Haley had a shot tonight to delve into a different genre. With her not only not succeeding, but with Gina also singing circles around her, she is definitely going to run into some problems tomorrow.

Phil Stacey decides to sing 'Every Breath You Take'. Since I thought he was in trouble, this could very well be every breath he takes.

The Good - He has that Sting voice. Perfect selection of a song. This is a return to the good Phil that we remembered.

The Bad - This was a perfect invite for a Phil Stacey big note at the end, and he didn't take it. A little too safe?

The Verdict - I don't know if this keeps him out of the Bottom 3, but it should keep him from leaving tonight.

Gwen would wish Melinda good luck, but she doesn't need it.She sings 'Heaven Knows', by...Donna Summer. Again.

The Good - Great personality in the vocals. And the vocals are spot on, as usual.

The Bad. Ok. It's Gwen Stefani night. We know that Donna Summer was an influence, but come on. Must the R and B singers be stereotypical and go after the R and B songs? Take a chance, Melinda. And the outfit makes you look like a fat butterfly.

The Verdict - I bet you that Jordin Sparks is going to take a risk. If she succeeds, Melinda and Lakisha better be very concerned.

Blake Lewis steps into some Cure with 'Love Song'. I love this song, so he better perform it well.

The Good - Blake sang this song straight - and pulled it off nicely. Proof that he doesn't have to tweak every single song to have a good performance.

The Bad - He did have to tweak the pitchiness in the first half of the song. He could have added some emotion into this song, which he didn't convey.

The Verdict - Does nothing to jeopardize his standing as the last male singer standing. Does nothing to do something better than to be the last man standing as we see a final 3 or final 2 of all females.

Jordin Sparks really takes the musicality into 'Hey Baby'. Gwen calls her cute and refreshing,

The Good - She pulled it off, big time. Perfect song, singing in a genre that she has not sang in before.

The Bad - A little pitchy in the middle. Not as good as her previous efforts.

The Verdict. The point wasn't the performance. The point was the versatility, and the fact that she got young. Now THIS is what I was talking about - an R and B singer that did not sing R and B. Great job, and it wouldn't surprise me to see her in the finals instead of Melinda or Lakisha.

Chris Richardson decided to sing 'Don't Speak'. Gwen wants him to focus on the song and emotion - something that he has problems connecting with.

The Good - Hey - it's No Doubt, and a good song selection to boot.

The Bad - Pitchy in the middle. In order for him to stick around for the long run, he's going to have to pay more attention to the technical side instead of putting all of it into the emotional and melodic runs.

The Verdict - He's safe - but ONLY because he was in trouble last week. He would have had MAJOR problems if he wasn't in trouble last week.

Overall Verdict - This show was a mixed bag. There were a number of good performances, and there were some decent efforts where you would not expect them from. There were also some duds that you would also not expect it from, and since the people who were in trouble brought it, we have to go after the duds.

Trouble: Haley Scarnato, Chris Sligh, Sanjaya Malakar

Haley goes back to the safety couch. Who leaves? The singer who is going to get caught in a Chris Richardson, Phil Stacey and Blake Lewis backlash? Or the singer who looks like he has given up and decided that his next performance will be Old McDonald Had a Farm?

Out: Vote For The Worst (The Chris Sligh Edition)

Tune in 24 hours from now to see if I'm right.

G.

I agree with what you've written. I think Haley (can't even remember what song she sang last night!) or Chris is going to go. Scara and I both used to really like Chris but have gone off him in a big way. Its like he's trying too hard to be cool, you know what I mean? And as good as I think Melinda and Lakisha are, I am kind of tired of hearing them do the same kinds of songs every week.

Thanks for the awesome write-up! And for letting me put in my 2 cents :)

Very close, but DialIdol edges you out this week. So, the Sanjaya vote - are you going with the King of all Media explanation, or the "youg girls are crazy" theory?
