Hello Everyone -
My name is Gordon Pepper. I am an editor and columnist from Gameshownewsnet.com, but you may have seen some of my work posted on different entertainment blogs (most recently on digg.com, among other sites). I am honored to be writing my thoughts on American Idol for this site.
The American Idol theme this week is all about the 16 remaining contestants revealing things about themselves. I can't wait to see what is going to happen when it's Antonella Barba's turn.
Blake Lewis likes to be Jimmy Walker Blue. His choices thus far does a great job of showing off his versatlility, with some very challenging and well thought-out song choices. This is probably their best chance of getting a guy into the Final Four.
The Good - The fact that the judges didn't know the song. Blake went young, to get the current younger demographic - and that demographic will vote.
The Bad - The fact that the judges didn't know the song also means that there is a huge chunk of Americana that doesn't know the band 311. That would also be a chunk of people who wouldn't vote for you because they don't know the music that you are singing.
The Verdict - He's a shoo-in for the Top 12. I think he'll make it much higher, but in order to do that, he has to be a little more mainstream, which may be against his nature.
Sanjaya Malakar can hula and can shake his booty Hawaiian style. I think he'll have no problem getting lei'd.
The Bad - The second he opened his mouth. Note to Sanjaya - even though every singer would love to hit the high range, you shouldn't do it if your high range may result in a cascade of snow falling off of a mountain peak and causing an avalanche.
The Good - It was better than what he did last week, but then again, listening to Paris Hilton yodel in Swiss would have been better than what he did last week.
The Verdict - He would have been gone if he was in the women's group. The sad fact that in the men's group, he wasn't even the worst performance. He will inexplicably make the Top 12 because almost none of the guys who needed to step up their game this evening did so.
Sundance's identity is that he claims that he is actually wearing a fat suit. So THAT'S what's been affecting his vocals.
The Good - He does have a very nice vocal range when he's on. He showed last week that he has that potential.
The Bad - He was not on this week. The only place that I have seen worse butchery was from my delicatessen. This went right back to his week 1 performance.
The Verdict - Only Carrie Underwood was able to take lyric mangling and get away with it. He will make the Top 12 just because of his massive screen time and that Vote For The Worst will have a field day between him and Sanjaya.
Chris Richardson may have been the person with the fat suit. He lost 40 pounds from playing football.
The Good - Very good choice of song, as he is trying to get into a genre that right now no one is singing - country. Like Blake, he is also showing off his versatility, and his twang broke through the song.
The Bad - Not the best execution. VERY pitchy in spots and I don't know what his musical identity is. Who is Chris Richardson?
The Verdict - The musical chops are there. The personality clearly is not and that can hurt him, especially since Blake has the cute guy market sewn up. He probably gets in, but barely.
Jared Kotter has a signature face mask where he grazes his hand over his face.
The Good - He picked a change of pace song. It's also a chance for him to improve his versatility.
The Bad - The pitch made me want to pull my hand over my face - and bury my face in my hands. There was no emotional range in his performance and it sounded like he was more throwing his words at you than singing to you.
The Verdict - We will have probably only one African-American in the Top 12, but Jared left the door wide open for Brandon to take that spot.
Brandon is also a classical piano player. It does make sense, because classical piano is gentle and not powerful, which is what he needs to be.
The Good - We get the best vocal performance from him for the past 3 weeks. We also finally hear him sing out and project, as he attempts to get out of his background vocal singer soft effort.
The Bad - The song was a bad choice. Why? It doesn't really showcase his vocals and any chance that he had to belt out a high pitch, he didn't take advantage, and the run at the end was excruciating.
The Verdict - If he gets in, it's because of all of these other bland performances. I think that if there's at least one spot available, he gets the spot, but it's possible that there will be 2 straight years where a male African-American singer doesn't get into the Top 12.
Phil Stacey used to have long hair. He's now a baldie-bean.
The Good - I can say that out of the all of the male vocalists tonight, Phil came to play. He decided to showcase off his vocals, and even though I am not familiar with the song, it's the one I'm going to remember...
The Bad - ...but I'm going to remember it for the wrong reasons. What? Was? That? Very pitchy all over the place to start. He did salvage it with the high notes, but you can't sing songs with all-high notes all of the time.
The Verdict - I had Phil in my Top 12. He's still there, but I don't know how long he's going to last there. He reminds me of Anwar 'One Note' Robinson, where the money note is on one side of the pool, but in order to grab it, you have to swim through 4 feet worth of broken glass to get there.
Chris Sligh had long hair, then short hair, then no hair. What's up with the guys talking about their hair?
The Good - Finally, a good performance. Yay! Nice vocals, nice range.
The Bad - So why do the judges not like the performance? Because the song was a rotten choice. It's not a well-known song and he certainly could have shined on a more popular song.
The Verdict - I thought he was going into the Top 12 tonight. He's probably going in as the Top 2 seeds, but only because everyone came in flat.
Overall Verdict - The judges were asked how many of the 12 guys should be in, and they all said 4. They were way too nice. Too much indulgence (selecting a song that they want to sing, without thinking that maybe the audience doesn't know the song, and will less be likely to vote for a singer) and not enough good singing moves the guys a HUGE step back from last week. With only two guys who really deserve to be in the Top 12 (Blake and Chris), and with the other 6 people who floundered this week, that not only opens the door for both Sanjaya and Sundance to stay in the competition, that also opens the door for people who shouldn't be leaving this early to go in an upset-like fashion.
Should Leave: Sundance and Sanjaya
Will Leave: Jared and Brandon
We'll see in 48 hours how accurate I am.
