Homeless Frank On The Attorney General Scandal
9 Comments

homeless Frank4.jpg

Editor's Note - Homeless Frank lives in front of the building where I work. I pay him food in return for blog entries. For this one he got a bottle of off brand vodka and 3 cans of Vienna Sausages. I've corrected spelling and grammar; all thoughts belong to Frank.

Today Homeless Frank shares his thoughts about the scandal surrounding Attorney General Alberto Gonzales.

"Reign Over Me" **1/2 (out of four): Writer-director Mike Binder's well-meaning but overlong study of a man coping with loss in the wake of 9/11 collapses under the weight of its own good intentions.

reignoverme.jpg

Despite how it’s being advertised, “Reign Over Me”, Mike Binder’s rumination on grief and loss, is not a “9/11 movie”. There is only what you might call a “light dusting” of references to the tragic events of that day, and though the film takes place in New York City, there are no longing studies of the famously fractured skyline or of Ground Zero. Charlie, the film’s alarmingly repressed protagonist, is referred to as the one “whose family was on the plane”. There are also allusions to people coming from “halfway around the world.” And though September 11th itself is never mentioned, September 12th is. So it’s clear what we’re dealing with here. Charlie (Adam Sandler) was a promising young dentist and family man until he lost his family that day. Charlie’s parents died when he was a child so his only remnants of family are a set of in-laws too wrapped up in their own loss to recognize Charlie’s right to grieve. And with the deck stacked so heroically against him – his wife, three daughters and their poodle were on the plane - it’s clear Mr. Binder is earnestly, if a bit crudely, playing for keeps.

Pool & the Gang

"Pride" *** (out of four): Simple but effective underdog story inspired by the life of Jim Ellis, the coach who took a condemned inner-city Rec Center and created a World Class swim team.

pride.jpg

Pride” is inspired by the story of Jim Ellis who in the 1970s took the condemned Marcus Foster Recreation Center, in the Nicetown section of Philadelphia, and turned it into a swimming facility for local kids, churning out young swimming scholars in the process. The film is centered on Mr. Ellis’ first year at P.D.R. (Philadelphia Department of Recreation) when he found a way to take a small group of black teens and coach them to the white-dominated Nationals. As you would imagine, many lessons are learned by the characters and there are a lot of swelling strings along the way - this is after all a classic, at times formulaic, underdog story. But it’s an effective one all the same.

Calvert DeForest also known as Larry “Bud” Melman passed away Monday at the age of 85. He introduced Dave Letterman on the very first Late Night show, and made made appearances until his retirement in 2002. DeForest also appeared in quite a few movies, TV shows, and music videos. He had requested that no funeral services be held.

That doesn’t stop us from paying tribute. Here are a few of his finer moments.

Bum Rush The Charts

Bumrush
There's an interesting social experiment going on today. Bum Rush The Charts is an effort to "strike fear into the hearts of the music industry" by using the power of the mob. Head over to iTunes TODAY and buy the track "Mine Again" by Black Lab, or better still, do it through this link where there will be an extra kickback to a good cause. It's an indie band who were turned down by several record labels, and the online community is attempting to get it to #1, to... well, just to prove that it can I think.

So, I'm not really convinced of the logic behind this. To be honest, if the mob acting together can put a band #1, then isn't that proof that iTunes is democratizing the music industry? Maybe I'm missing something. But hey, who am I to question. Go buy, and we'll see what happens. Be interesting to see if it works.

Haterade is 2-0 with his bottom three leaving, but he didn't get it exactly right this week. Why did he not follow his own rules? Why was Chris Richardson not surprisingly in the bottom two? Why did we only get a Final Two? And what is an American Idol Pool? Find out more inside.
