Wolverine vs. Sabretooth. Silver Age Team-ups. NRA conspiracies. Yakuza. And retarded unicorns.
Every Wednesday we run down the 5 most interesting comics and graphic novels that come out today. These are the 5 books I'd be buying myself if I hadn't bet this week's comics money on the Patriots and the Saints this weekend.
I really have no business even watching football.
5. WOLVERINE #50 (Marvel)
Written By: Jeph Loeb; Art by Simone Bianchi and Ed McGuinness

A double sized 50th issue. Plus a black and white variant!! OMG!! BW!!1!! New writer Jeph Loeb of Batman:Hush and now Lost and Heroes fame (he's a writer for both shows) starts as the new series writer and newcomer Simone Bianchi of Seven Soliders: Shining Knight fame does his moody, heavily shaded thing on the art. Plus there's a backup drawn by Ed McGuinness. As for the story, basically we may or may not learn something new about the relationship between Wolverine and Sabretooth. We will definitely get a big fight though, that's for sure. Not sure what's going on in this page below but it looks a little pervy.

4. TANPENSHU Vol. 1 (Dark Horse)
By Hiroki Endo

Endo is the creator of the popular and long running Eden series and this is his long awaited collection of short stories. This first volume contains 3 stories as described by the publisher's website: A disfigured misfit befriends a doomed yakuza outcast, a group of school kids fail to see the anger that's about to boil over from one of their own, and members of an experimental theatre troupe embark on a project that will test both their friendships and the group's grasp on reality.
Bound to be dark and intriguing.

3. SHOWCASE PRESENTS: THE BRAVE AND THE BOLD — THE BATMAN TEAM-UPS VOL. 1 (DC Comics)
Written by Bob Haney and Mike Sekowsky Cover by Bob Brown; Art by Carmine Infantino, Ross Andru, Neal Adams, and others

A good team-up is a must for any super hero worth his weight in spandex and back in the day Batman bounced from partner to partner like Paris Hilton with a utility belt. DC does a great job with these phonebook-sized black and white Showcase volumes. Each collects 500+ pages of classic comics for less than $20. This is bound to have a lot of silliness in it but it's also got art by the likes of Carmine Infantino and Neal Adams in a format where you can appreciate the great linework.

2. CALVARIO HILLS #1 (Fantagraphics)
By Marti

Spanish artist Marti's work has been described as "Chester Gould on crack" so what more do you really need to know about this new series from Fantagraphic's Ignatz series? It's about a conspiracy involving Charlton "Preston" and the NRA working to fix an election. But not if the local crackheads have anything to say about it. There's also a backup featuring Marti's "Cabbie" character in which Cabbie picks up the President who is fleeing the country in disgrace and needs Cabbie's help.

1. BACK IN BLECK: BLECKY YUCKERELLA VOL. 2 (Fantagraphics)
By Johnny Ryan

There's no one out there quite like Johnny Ryan. This is the 2nd collection of his weekly strip that appears in places like Vice Magazine. It's full of jokes about snot, poo, body parts, retarded unicorns and pregnant babies among other things. Check out the strip below for an idea of what you'd be getting yourself into here.
