Wednesday is New Comics Day

FF_122_pope1_f.jpg

Batman one hundred years later, Eve without Adam, and a monkey detective. Every Wednesday we run down the 5 most interesting comics and graphic novels that come out this week. These are the 5 books I'd be buying myself if I hadn't already spent this week's comics money on that hooker in Albermarle. Good times. But hey, these comics are probably pretty good too.

5. THE HELMET OF FATE: DETECTIVE CHIMP (DC Comics)
Written by Bill Willingham; Art by Shawn McManus; Cover by Brian Bolland

DC is bringing back Dr. Fate with a series of one-shots leading to an eventual mini-series. This one features Detective Chimp who has been enjoying a bit of a comeback himself. If stories about monkeys solving mysteries of the occult are your thing than this would probably be #1 on your own top 5 list.

4. THE SPIRIT #2 (DC Comics)
Written by Darwyn Cooke; Art by Cooke and J. Bone; Cover by Cooke

Issue 2 of Darwyn Cooke's The Spirit which is proving to be different than Will Eisner's The Spirit which is probably a good idea on Cooke's part. This issue re-introduces a classic Spirit villain, the sexy P'Gell.

3. THE LOST BOOKS OF EVE (Viper Comics)
By Josh Howard

Dead At 17 creator Josh Howard tells the story of when Adam went missing from the Garden of Eden and Eve had to venture out in search of him facing danger from wizards, monsters and demons. You know - that story.

2. ALINE & OTHERS (Drawn & Quarterly)
By Guy Delisle

Delisle has gained fame in the past year from his two travelogue graphic novels Pyongang and Shenzhen. Here he collects 26 wordless comic strips each named, in alphabetical order, after their female protagonists. Each story is bizarre in a way that calls to mind the work of Bill Plimpton. 1. BATMAN: YEAR ONE HUNDRED (DC Comics)
By Paul Pope

6412_180x270.jpg

This graphic novel collects last year's 4 issue mini-series by the hugely popular Paul Pope. Set in the year 2039, the Batman returns and is wanted for murder. Pope specializes in futuristic settings and his manga-influenced sense of action brings a unique feel to the caped crusader. As a special bonus, this book also reprints Pope's "Berlin Batman" story set 100 years prior to the main story.
