Has "Lost" lost its way?

Lostfox01
Last year, we extensively covered Lost, enjoying the minutiae of detail attached to every theory. I remember a whole discussion about when Lost may be taking place - the past, the near future, the far future?

Last night we got our answer to that - we're 60 or so days after the season 1 premiere, back in 2004. Jack was amazed that the Red Sox had finally beaten The Curse of the Bambino (though, curiously, less surprised that the nation had suffered temporary insanity and re-elected George W Bush).

And I found myself really not caring - in fact, the clip of the World Series gave me a weird "jumped the shark" feeling in the pit of my stomach. I know we're only a couple of episodes in, but it's starting to feel like Lost is starting to go the way of The X Files. By the time we get to a solution, it'll be so convoluted that we'll all shrug and wonder why we'd ever cared so much. By comparison, I'm digging Studio 60 on Sunset Strip and longing for the next Battlestar Galactica.

But my Lost season pass on TiVo just moved to a notch above Prison Break.

I think I agree with what you're saying (though I quit on Studio 60 after 2 episodes and think it's highly overrated). Maybe BSG is ruining Lost for me a little. Still I loved the season opener and even though last night's episode bored me a little I'm sure they'll suck me back in as soon as next week even. But yeah I've always worried that they're going to drag these mysteries out too long and I think it's pretty obvious that they're making a lot of this up as they go along without as much of a master plan as we all hope there is.

To defend the Red Sox scene though that had some extra meaning considering Jack's dad on two different occassion's said something like "and that's why the Red Sox will never win the Series."

I wonder if your frustration with the show is from the fact that your theories were all wrong?

I do like Studio 60. I caught the pilot on YouTube and watched the next three episodes today so I'm overloaded with Sorkinisms. Well written and fun, you have to watch them instead of being able to have them on the background and still understand the story as you can with the numerous crime procedural shows.

Given that Lost is done by the same guy who created Alias, I'm tempted to wonder if the leader of the "Others" will turn up being none other than... you guessed it - Rumbaldi.

I finally gave up on Alias after the 3rd season and I'm seeing Lost go the same way... Too many mysteries & a distinct feeling that the show's writers and/or producers don't even have a clue where they're headed or what the answers to the mysteries are. And why did the unseen but oh-so-deadly and scary jungle dinosaur monsters from season 1 seem to never rematerialize in season 2?

Or maybe I'm being too harsh?

LOST has lost it. I'm not giving up yet, but it seems less and less like a complex mystery being revealed and more and more like they're making it up as they go along. It's kind of weird that the Others know everything about everyone, but now that we've seen them A TON, there's hardly any mystery there. It's also no fun to watch a show where the heroes aren't winning. They're not even struggling. BSG the heroes struggle sometimes they win, sometimes they lose, the characters get deeper and deeper. Not so much so more on Lost.

Just watched the first two episodes. I agree I'm not into every single detail anymore (two years was enough) but I'm still into the show. I liked the World Series bit, and didn't we know what date it was after the end of last season? Next up, I have to check out this BSB show everyone's raving about.

Lost definitely has a problem with developing interesting ideas, playing with them a little tiny bit, giving us no answers, and then moving on: The 'Black Smoke Monster', Polar Bears, Walt's possible backwards talking and communication through a computer, etc.

And the fact that no one really seems to care that the hatch imploded, Locke, Eko (sp?), and Desmond have disappeared and reappeared, the sky turning white, electro-magnetic fluctuations, etc... I don't know. Bizarre stuff.

My brother and I just watched the 'special features' disc for the Lost Season 2 boxset -- and other than one writer saying that there was an overall story, and a few producers/directors saying that there would be a 'trick ending' (as in they all wake up and JR was never shot), it seems that the writers and creative teams invent the stuff up as they go... and that is a bit of an unsettling realization. I would feel a lot safer knowing there was a strong overall story arc, and that the playful avenues the teams take us down will lead to something and not remain unexplored.

Twin Peaks was absolutely amazing for two seasons, and I even enjoy much of the beginning of season 3... but, well, as everyone who had watched the entire show, the ending was... disappointing, at least in my opinion. One of my friends always tells people who are interested in the show - "Stay away from season three -- and if you can't resist that urge, I guarantee you the last episode will ruin the whole experience for you."

To be honest, Lost season 3 has picked up a bit... but, I am still not convinced it won't slide into what someone has already pointed out - the convoluted complicatedness of the final throes of the X-Files.

too many twists and turns, when i first watched the show, i thought "how long can this possibly go on"...the basic premise of a group of people on an island can only last so long before people start wondering why the hell they can't get off the damn island...

now when i watch it, i pull out my hair becuase it just gets more and more convoluted...
