Some People VIII

people.jpg

Another trip to the in-laws, another edition of Some People. Again, these are actual reader letters published in People magazine.

On Lance Bass

"Lance Bass can lead any kind of lifestyle he chooses, but he can't be a homosexual and a Christian, and he should not mislead others into believing he is at peace with God. Homosexuality is an abomination to God. Loving and accepting people is what all of us should do, but the Bible teaches us that the lifestyle Lance has chosen is absolutely forbidden."

Midfield, Alabama

Amber Frey Marries

"After all is said and done, I find it appalling that Amber Frey's father could make such a comment as, "Only two guys wanted to marry her...the first killed his wife, and now Bobby." Does he really believe that murderer Scott Peterson wanted to marry her? Please, Scott is a proven liar. Hopefully, Laci's parents won't see that comment."
Susan
Manteca, California

It sure would be a shame if Laci's parents found out Scott wasn't a great husband.

See the first, second, third, fourth, fifth , sixth and seventh installments in this oldie-but-goodie feature.

Daydream Believer

"The Science of Sleep" **1/2 (out of four): Visionary director Michel Gondry is stymied by his own script in this whimsical, messy French confection.

scienceofsleep.jpg

Michel Gondry is a director to watch. Regardless of the medium (short, feature-length, music video), you can count on him to come up with something visually stunning. In the lightly autobiographical “The Science of Sleep (La Science des Rêves)”, Mr. Gondry turns his whimsical eye towards a script of his own creation – and that may be the problem with the film. Without a script from his frequent collaborator Charlie Kaufman – with whom he made the masterful “Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind” as well as the unfairly-ignored trifle “Human Nature” – Mr. Gondry’s “Science” goes too far into the realm of fantasy and lacks a crucial grounding that could have made it truly fantastic.

On the Dark Side

PinkFloyd.jpg
Looks like some of the missing Apollo 11 moon footage has been found. In a Pink Floyd video.

The reel belongs to Australian film producer and rock video director Peter Clifton, who had all but forgotten a pristine 16-millimetre film of the moon landing was part of his vast personal film catalogue.

Mr Clifton had ordered the reel in 1979 for a rock film he was making about Pink Floyd's The Dark Side Of The Moon but forgot he had it until seeing a news report on television recently.

Go figure.

See Um in the Museum

museumspotting.JPG
Once again, I’m adding to the list of websites where you can post an odd photograph of yourself within a theme. Museum Spotting? Let me explain. Have you ever been at a museum and had the urge to join in the display? Now, I’m certainly not advocating breaking any laws, but if you do this, and get a photo, send it in to the fairly new Museum Spotting gallery and give yourself 15 minutes of fame. If not, go see what they’ve got already.

Lunch Hour Veg

CrankYankers.jpg

Nothing beats puppets making crank phone calls...almost as much fun as robots beating the crap out of each other, but we'll save that for another day. Check out four clips from another Comedy Central show that should still be on the air...Crank Yankers.

Supporting Cast

world-trade-center-29.jpg

Went to see World Trade Center yesterday, and like most reviews I've read I also thought it was an amazing movie. From the moment I sat down, into the previews, and through most of the beginning I can honestly say I was the most tense I had ever been in a theater. You can't help but go through what you were doing that day while Port Authority Police Officers John McLoughlin and Will Jimeno were stuck in the rubble. And just like everyone else in the theater, I did tear up a few times, and noticed many still crying on the way out. Long story short, I highly recommend seeing the movie.

What I wasn't expecting though, were the stories of the men who found and rescued officers McLoughlin and Jimeno...the two ex-marines that found the officers, and the NYC police officer and former paramedic who first went in to rescue them. These couldn't have been four more different guys, but they all dropped everything and went to lower Manhattan that day, because they needed to do whatever they could to help. Obviously, these are just four examples of heroism, out of the thousand that took place at ground zero. But the stories give you a sense of the types of people on the scene on September 11th, all wanting to help with the rescue.

Click through the links to read about NYC Police Officer Scott Strauss, former NYC Paramedic Chuck Sereika, former Marine Jason Thomas and Staff Sgt. David W. Karnes. It's definitely interesting to read about the details the movie portrayed correctly, and the ones they missed.
