The Grindhouse - Deadly Weapons

Welcome to the first edition of The Grindhouse!

Once a week, starting today, we'll watch trailers from grindhouse cinema classics, discuss their meaning, debate their subtext, and maybe, just maybe, learn a little something about ourselves in the process.

It's like Oprah's Book Club, but with a lot more nudity, sex, and violence.

So, let's just jump into this week's trailer, shall we?

"Do you know that the female breast, known to be the source of life since Eve, can be...DEADLY WEAPONS?"

Watch the NSFW trailer, then click "Continue..." for Film Facts and Discussion Topics.

FILM FACTS
Doris Wishman's Deadly Weapons was released in 1974 and was her twentieth feature film, according to IMDB. Wishman has 28 feature films to her credit, making her quite possibly the most prolific female director of all time.

Her directing style has been compared to David Lynch. She has a penchant for focusing on inanimate objects, such as a dirty ash tray, for minutes on end while a scene plays out.

Chesty Morgan was a polish Burlesque star, and reportedly the relationship between Chesty and Doris was very strained. Despite this, they did make a sequel together, Double Agent 73, which we'll cover in a future edition of The Grindhouse.

Even though Deadly Weapons features a pre-Deep Throat Harry Reems, there are no hardcore sex scenes in the film.

DISCUSSION TOPICS
Why is Crystal using a fun house mirror to admire herself? What does this say about her?

Why does Crystal use her breasts as deadly weapons, rather than buying a gun, or using a knife?

Why does Harry Reams (Tony) just sit there and allow Crystal to approach slowly, before she smothers him to death?

Join the discussion by posting your responses and thoughts in the comments below.

She uses her breasts instead of more traditional weaponry because they inspire fear. She freezes her victims in their tracks before crushing their airways with her lethal cleavage. It's a double whammy! Heh Heh.
